  • Hard News: A news site where you can…,

I/S highlights abuse of urgency by the National government, then shoots at foot by saying that no comparable abuse took place in the previous Labour government. The Labour government undertook urgency to pass legislation immediately prior to the election, this was an unjustifiable abuse for party political ends as there were no impending deadlines that could not be met by a post-election government.

Are you really that partisan that you see equivalence here?

I do see equivalency between passage under urgency and passage under urgency. I am that partisan.

Most of the bills being dealt with are non-controversial and will be sent to select committees for the next Parliament to deal with.

A respected commentator (at the time) found surprise that a bill of significant public interest were being passed under urgency, but concluded the tactic to be good politics and merely "an incentive to play nice".

If this is what National calls governing from the centre, you have to wonder where that centre is.

Same place it was in September - Wellington.

  • Hard News: Birth of the Nasty,

CTU press release today: CTU president Helen Kelly said the organisation was assured the law change would not be part of the Government's first 100 days of action.

Surely the politic thing to do would be to wait until unemployment increases a bit, as it is bound to do in the coming year. This 90 Day Trial can then be introduced as a solution and if it is timed right - in step with a bottoming out of the worldwide economy - unemployment will soon reduce and the Bill can be proclaimed a success.

Actually, they are a lot like the Obama conspiracy theorists really.

They parallel the netroots who now fear that Obama will not be progressive enough. There and here the people who see themselves as "core support" have difficulty accepting that they won't get everything they want and so shout alot.

  • Field Theory: The Return,

Graham Henry is a very good coach, but I do not think he is great. I fear Graham Henry reads too much into his own press bellieving he is truly the "Great Redeemer" and when the pressure comes on has a tendency to play unsupported hunches.

It has been a good year for the All Blacks and NZ rugby, but how much of this year's results have been down to Graham Henry?

A large part of AB success seems to have been due to having a more coherent team structure, gained by dropping of the rotation policy and dropping the mainly off field conditioning programs we had last year. Those dubious methods were implemented by Graham Henry in 2007 on the basis of "trust us it will pay off in France". This year has seen ABs greater game time in the S14 and as a unit. Similar coaching methods to what occured in 2005, 2006 have seen a return to the form of 2005, 2006.

The strange selection policies of 2007 were implemented by Graham Henry acting on an intuition of what he believed was a better way, he was wrong. I have concerns that come 2011 Graham Henry will have another "inspiration".

Delaying the ETS, while other countries move ahead and are already taking countermeasures against recalcitrant nations that deny global warming. Like taxing air fares.

Good on the Brits for appliying a "carbon tax" to international air travel. We should do the same.
