Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to
There was a wonderful interview on Radio NZ just before 6 pm yesterday with that mountaineer describing how, after they found only a hole where the staircase used to be, they found some ropes and all calmly abseiled down the side of the building.
I saw a few photos of people abseiling out of windows and wondered where they'd got the courage. Bless them.

Stop bragging, young’un.
Ahem.
On this topic, it's not bragging until I start. Unless Leo shows up, that is.

Apart from disagreeing, too soon, surely? The ‘abuse of power’ meme usually takes more than 24 hours to come up, doesn’t it?
I saw dictator-flees-to-Saudi jokes, mmm, three hours later. I guess people are pre-primed. (If not, sadly, tasteful or funny.)
Those reports about the Hotel Grand Chancellor are sounding very worrying. It's not a small building, and if it goes...

With the live feeds I saw yesterday, I was pleasantly impressed by the lack of “shove a camera down the throat of the crying woman” vox pops.
I...appreciated, if that's the word, some of the early footage from outside the Pyne Gould building, where they didn't try to interview people or narrate what was going on; they just showed it, without interpretation. It felt - appropriate. And brought the whole thing home.

I heard a report that the secondary schools were almost empty (saving more injuries from falling ceilings, flying computers etc) because the teachers were going to a paid union meeting. Anyone know any more about this?
I definitely saw a news article quoting a teacher saying that there had only been 40 kids at one school because of a union meeting. Can't tell you which school it was, or primary v. secondary, though.
(Also, Craig - Ross said that last thing you replied to, not me. I'm on your side! Don't shoot!)

For all of us we don't know who we know have gone but hiding the numbers for bureaucracy's sake seems very strange to me.
As Che pointed out, it isn't for bureaucracy's sake - it's because with the city the way it is there probably is no way to accurately tally the unconfirmed dead and, more importantly, there are the living to find. Seriously - who do you think does this? The police and fire crews have much, much more important things to do. So they'll announce what they can accurately confirm. It's not a conspiracy or a failure to grasp reality. Let it go.

Please come back to reality. Please.
Honestly? It's going to be horrific enough. Thirty-odd people is horrific enough. I'd rather they waited to retrieve and identify people. If they're dead, they're dead. If they're alive, rescue is the priority. How does it help right now to know exactly how many can't be saved? We'll know, eventually. One way or the other.

I feel bad for feeling bad about my own situation when all my loved ones are safe and I have a house I can live in.
"Less bad" is not the same as "not bad". You have every right to be upset, I mean, really, just the description of your street sounds horrific.
Hope you can get some sleep tonight.

Another chopper is carrying a monsoon bucket. Into the city. It’s bizarre.
I heard they were using monsoon buckets to put out house fires - any confirmation? I'm assuming fire isn't a major worry now, with rain. About the only thing that's good for.

As for a tsunami, being the epicentre means the wave radiates outward. Christchurch would’ve been safe.
A stronger earthquake located just offshore could have caused similarly bad damage and a totally inescapable (because it would arrive so quickly) tsunami. But true, nothing onshore would have that effect.
