The massive difference between the contents of this thread and the one at Kiwiblog is interesting. Same topic to begin with (although not the same pov), wildly diverging comments resulting.
Russell, I'm curious - have you had to do any moderating on PA System or have people generally behaved?

Some of my favourite Shortland St characters are Australian.
One of the things that I think is counter productive for NZers about Australian race relations policy is it allows us to be complacent about our own problems. We look at them and think well we're soooo much better than that, then sit back in the lazy-boy and watch some more cricket (have I mentioned that I hate cricket yet in this thread?).
Just because we have less work to do than them doesn't mean we have none to be done.

Perhaps, to put it simply, it is that some of us on the left oppose many of the fundamentalist aspects of religions, but don't feel that the best way to do that is to bag the entire religion and its followers wholus bolus?
The bagging seems to me to often have racist connotations...

Keith, I wonder if the recent spate of comic book movies have softened the mainstream audience's attitude to sci-fi.
I enjoyed Heroes too, but I'm wondering what they will do once they solve the first crisis...

From what little I hear about the inner workings of the Anglican church it sounds like internationally there is a major split coming over issues to do with homosexuality. Something about the Southern US branch considering joining up with the African part or something? Perhaps another reader is less ignorant of the details than I?

Mark, as a left wing nutjob of the highest order, I am concerned about religious fundamentalism, whether it comes from Christianity, Islam, Judaism, worship of He of the Noodly Appendages, or anywhere really.
What particularly concerns me is the use of religion and religious institutions as a means of social control - particularly for women and those of minority races and sexualities.
Most religions that are widely recognised seem to me to epitomise the saying "broad church". I've encountered racist, sexist and homophobic Christians but have met others who are not only open-hearted white straight men, but also actively campaign for rights for those others would oppress.
The history of many religions' leaderships is often less enlightened than ordinary members, and change at the highest levels comes slowly. Which is one of several reasons why I'm not interested in joining any religion anytime soon.
I worry a lot about Islamic fundamentalism and what it means particularly for XXers and those who prefer their own sex, but Christian fundamentalism is what I encounter personally more often.

RB, Mexted is one of the reasons I get so frustrated watching rugger these days - he's frequently just wrong, and/or doesn't know what is going on. Grrrrr.

I'm guilty of cleaning for the cleaner too. Although really it's more like tidying than cleaning. Few cleaning products are harmed in the manufacture of the "cleanliness".
Re blogger drinks - there's a difference between a) not going because you are not interested, and b) using the fact that you are not going to try to score political points and show that you are some kind of violent anti-Left type who is harder than everyone else.
Whaleoil (and others) seem to be unaware of the fact that the drinks were initially organised by a National blogger (David Farrar) along with Labour blogger Jordan Carter. But for some the hatred of anything Labour is too strong. Which is, to be fair, entirely consistent of Whaleoil; he got his start in blogging through abusing a Labour candidate routinely in comments when that candidate dared to have a blog during the 2005 election.
