Polity: Too much to swallow on the TPP, in reply to
After Northland, National’s 59 + ACT’s 1 is not enough in a 121 seat Parliament. They need Dunne or the Maori Party, too.
They might get Dunne, but I can't see how they would get the Maori Party.

If National and ACT are the only parties to support TPP, will it pass? I don't have the numbers in front of me.

Speaker: Sex, monsters and outrage, in reply to
And according to another SEN post the same school, just in the last week, put on some sort of whole-school show run by Equippers church.
My kids go to this school so I know a bit about what's been happening.
The session run during the school day had no actual Christian content and was focussed on bullying. However, the evening session run in the school hall did have Christian content, but attendance at that session was completely voluntary (not unlike many schools allowing churches to use their halls for services at the weekend). Having said that, I can see where a secular presentation can easily contain some disguised Christian content.
There was a great rebuttal of the post on the SEN by a Papanui Year 12 student.

Hard News: How about that cricket, eh?, in reply to
Also: American husband completely won over by this World Cup*. It can be done! One American at a time!
*He kept mixing up his cricket terminology with his baseball terminology, urging Elliot to do a “walk-off” and “call his shot like Babe Ruth”, but that added an extra layer of fun to the proceedings.
I’m American and have been living in various countries in the Commonwealth for the past 18 years (in NZ for almost 13 years). When I first arrived in the UK I started following cricket and even played for five years. Last night’s game was the best finish I’ve ever seen.

We're in Burwood, and much of our old neighborhood is red-zoned. There are still quite a few houses to be removed, including one lonely one just opposite the intersection with Locksley Ave... it's a bit curious what's holding up the demolition of that one.

Russell, there was a famous academic paper written on the subject by the social psychologist Roy Baumeister (who was my PhD supervisor many moons ago). There's a good summary of his (and related) research here:

The granting of the gag order will (IMO) be the coup de grâce for democracy in New Zealand... if there was anything left of it prior to that.

Great piece. We are in the "orange but going to turn red" zone and will be facing this ourselves in the coming months. The rest of the country really needs to pay close attention to what's going on here.

Summer was complete rubbish down here until February. :|

The exit polls in 2004, which were mysteriously vaporised at some point during election day, actually had Kerry winning.
And let's take a close look at what happened in Ohio...
