  • Busytown: Oh, Gee,

No luck on the jeans front

To my great surprise I recently found a pretty decent pair of jeans in Farmers.

I find a lot of jeans have their narrowest point right on the widest bit of my hips which fails to be either comfortable or flattering.

To find out which is the strongest eye look through both eyes at your forefinger and place the forefinger in front of an object. Close one eye (right or left) . Which ever eye is stronger will keep the finger on the object. The weaker eye moves it either left for a strong left eye or right for a stronger right eye. Interesting if you have ever had hand eye coordination problems.

I tried this and my astigmatism (normally too mild to notice) went wild and now I have a headache. And I still don't know which eye is dominant. I suspect that this means I should never be allowed to handle any form of projectile weapon.

  • Island Life: A simple 'your lordship'…,

My kid's teachers all go by their first names but his school is a bit alternativish and encourages that kind of egalitarianism. There still seems to be a hang of a lot of respect for them though.

We gave the kids hyphenated last names. I like the way it ties all the family together without anyone having to sacrifice their identity to the larger unit. "The Hitchings-Anstice Family" encompasses al the extended family on both sides. I figure that when they get older and have kids they can choose which bits they want to pass on probably based on whatever combination is most melifluous.

I've taken to using Rev when forced to give a title. Occasionally I get mail addressed to The Reverend Isabel Hitchings and it always makes me laugh.

  • Southerly: Nine Months of Baby Hell,

It took me some time to realise that I didn't have the slowest baby in my coffee group but was just the worst lier. My oldest was also a once-a-week pooer (we went nowhere on Fridays) though his were more concentrated than explosive.

I'm sure that a strong willed, characterful baby like Bob is going to be much more fun as he grows than those babies who sleep all the time and never complain will be.

  • Hard News: What I'd really like to know,

I admit I've only been listening to the news with half an ear for the last couple of days but, with the way the "junket" has been presented by the media I was, until I came here, under the impression that retiring MPs were being sent on a nice holiday as some kind of goodbye present rather than it being a working trip that simply included some MPs that mightn't be around this time next year.

  • Stories: Joined Up,

I started life as a non-joiner. My mother kept me out of brownies and the like knowing it wouldn't be my thing so all I joined during my school years were music and drama classes.

When I got to university I joined KAOS which sucked up entirely all of my life for a few years (mostly in a good way). Joining KAOS was the result of peer pressure more than anything and I still wasn't a natural joiner.

Then I had a baby. Starved of adult company I eagerly joined a Plunket sponsored coffee group where I quickly established myself as the weird, hippy outsider and found myself increasingly on the defensive. After a few months of that I ran away and joined La Leche League instead where I was more of a middle-level hippy insider. From LLL I was persuaded to join Playcentre and (after my second baby) the Homebirth Association. I've been suckered into office bearing positions and sub-committees in all three organisations so for someone who was once described as "a reticent loner" in a school report I seem to have evolved into a serious joiner.

  • Speaker: Community Modelling with DAS,

As a frequent lurker around these parts I'd say that the bar for posting is set very high. For a first post (on any forum) I feel like I need to be able to say something of substance which adds something new to the conversation and yet I don't want to attract too much critical attention until I've got a couple of posts under my belt and had a chance to establish myself as something other than totally useless and it's easy to get a bit paralysed waiting for the exact right moment.

    Back under my rock now.
