Hard News: The Sky is the limit, in reply to
Just like the end of National’s last time in govt then
Yup, the same "more with less" mantra being openly parroted as well.

I think if the ‘Gerry Brownlie Memorial Stadium’ were to be given the green light, there’d be riots!
With lots of the rioters wanting to make the "memorial" part immediate.

See also: the release of a nine-month-old report into what a complete clusterfuck Steven Joyce's "super ministry" is.
The word on the street (in the Bubble, at least) is that MoBIE is about to implode and has been for a while now. They're laying off contractors (sorry, "exercising early termination options") and not allowing replacement hires in a lot of areas, even though those areas are running below minimum requirements. They're also trying to restrict how much leave staff can carry (legislation says 30 days, they're trying to say 20 - good luck with that!)
Indications are that they are running out of opex and the financial year is only half over. Couldn't happen to a more deserving Minister.

Seasons Greetings David. Is there any chance of an end of year wrap on this saga please? It is a fascinating piece of genealogy.
Ditto. I have just read it through with great pleasure (I was busy when it first posted and missed it, not that I had anything to contribute). The big G is a great way to dispose of time ;-)

Spend a bit of dosh and get a good quality microphone.
What he said. You can always dirty up sound when you want it, but you need to capture clean first.
Also, look at the recording setup. I'm guessing Jim is doing his piece into a webcam on a laptop? Try using a separate webcam in a sound shell, with no screen in front, to take all the reverb out. Reverb is noise - you can add it in post but you can't get rid of it if it's in the raw recording (had to redo an entire 90 minute commentary to learn that the hard way, which always takes way more than 90 minutes to record...).
I built a frame out of garden stakes and tied egg cartons to it. Ridiculously low tech but makes a world of difference to the sound. The mic pokes through a gap and I have what I'm reading on a sloping platform (covered with green felt) below it. Long cable from mic to recording implement of choice so that it can be well away and reduce any hum or ambient noise. It's almost too dead, but I can liven it up if necessary afterwards. Took me a while to realise I didn't need a screen in front of me to interact with - but I'm not recording video, just spoken word.

I am conscientiously avoiding anything resembling a mall
We sourced most of the family presents from OpShops this year, like the Sallies and the Hospice shops. Reuse and give to charity at the same time.

You’ll get your cake when you complete the initiation process. Sacha will explain the details. It’s nothing to worry about, although you might want to bring a change of clothes.
I'm not sure if cake is a step up or a step down from a toaster oven. Craig?

I've noticed this year that nobody criticises any thing - they slam it, according to the MSM.

how about the ’Bowen Triangle” ?
That works too, and many a good policy has been lost in it...

Given the number of quays in central Wellington (Lambton, Waterloo, Thorndon, Aotea), how about Quay – “That is such a Quay issue” ;-)
People other than David Farrar (who really, really wants to be NZ's Karl Rove) sometimes refer to it as the Thorndon Bubble, being the line between the Cenotaph and Premier House and some side offices on the Terrace (Treasury, DPMC and SSC, as well as the Reserve Bank). It's also full of hot air.
Farrar and co are desperate to control the framing of discussions so they work hard to make sure their words are used by the media - it means the media are more receptive to churning National's press releases if they're written in the same language. The Quays are where real people work, live and shop, not the politicians.
