  • Hard News: After the Charter,

But I sort of feel they'd never live up to the albums, now. (I don't though feel the need to sneer at anyone who does go, esp. if they enjoy themselves. Each to their own. )

Understand. I was actualy pleasantly suprised how good Daltry and Townsend still were on stage. You'd excuse a couple of guys in their 60s if they kind of took it easy and just took the money. But they were filled with energy and played a solid set.

I'm not pretending they were at their peak (I imagine at their peak they must have been about the best live act ever). But still worth the ridiculous ticket price.

I'm kind of resigned to the fact the only concert I'll be going to this year will be The Wiggles. Which is not as tragic as it sounds: my daughter will love it, and I'll get a real buzz out of seeing that.

Thankfully the boy's not into the Wiggles - yet. It's only a matter of time though (sigh...)

I shall entertain myself, watching Captain Feathersword and Dorothy the Dinosaur. I have long held a suspicion they are more than friends, and will be looking for any signs of this.

Who knew? Someone should contact Family First

  • Hard News: Problems,

Actually I was kind of hoping we could return to...what was Russell's blog post about, again?

    Recession stuff.

Talking of which, is this the answer to NZ's recession woes? Think of the global market potential...

Meta: is anyone else finding it hilarious that this thread is now All. About. Scifi?

I know what you mean. Can't we get back to discussing copyright?

There won't be any polar bears to hug soon, thanks to global warming.

So a sensible move by the PM. Why invest in programmes that won't be sustainable over the long term?

  • Hard News: Problems,

Paul, you're taking a lot of flak on this thread because of your opinions about sci-fi.

What you need is some protection from all this incoming fire.

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

I'm not sure I should even use the word "debate" when it comes to global warming. The only debate should be about what we are going to do to address global warming.

And while the ban on the old lightbulbs was a small step, the rush to repeal the ban says a lot about this government's approach to environmental issues. Until quite recently Key was in open denial about climate change. His government's actions to date suggest nothing much has changed, whatever his recent pronouncements.

But, Global warming is a big business in itself. Ask any academic looking for funding, If you want funding all you have to do is append the name of your study with the words "With regard to Global Warming" and you're home and hosed.

So the global warming debate is being fuelled by academics to get more funding for their projects?

Interesting theory. I would have thought that what was fueling the debate was...um... the actual evidence that mankind is contributing to global warming. Unless you're suggesting that scientists and academics made all that shit up?

Russell, I think Key has bigger things to worry about as tourism minister than his cherished cycle path.

    This just in:

Two Australians don't like NZ. This is a crisis!

In any case, most geek culture enthusiasms are really not that profound.

Paul, let's be honest - most of us aren't profound. I'm not a geek, but I don't claim to be profound. That doesn't mean someone can't have an opinion and express it.

It is just that most geeks have not read anything outside their preferred genres, and that most geeks are very literal-minded.

And your authority for this is...? I know plenty of geeks, and I wouldn't describe the ones I know as literal minded. Sure they may obsess over things we might not be interested in, but then we all have our own obsessions. So what's the harm?

  • Hard News: Problems,

Each to her own. I find people hijacking conversations to enthuse about their favourite television programmes or their sex lives to be very rude.

I think the point people were trying to make was that you could learn a lot about the current crisis by watching certain TV shows.

Now that's not necessarily an opinion I share. But I don't think that makes those people rude, or that those people should shut up. If they think it's relevant, what's the harm?

It's the entertaining way that every thread seems to end up in a discussion about random things that makes PAS so enjoyable - except when that thing is s92A... :(
