  • Hard News: What Now?,

Just popping back after going through that photo-set to plug it again, it’s extraordinary. So much I hadn’t previously seen.

Amazing. Although I'm struggling with the use of the 'like' button in the circumstances. Raises a different level of emotional response which FB isn't necessarily designed for.

    'Dumbstruck' might be more apt.

Some of it was also because the Allies renounced the idea of endlessly punishing them for it, and instead rebuilt those countries, rather than squeezing their throats with sanctions.

Ahem. Some might say... another time maybe.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Emma Hart,

For non-location-specific work (obviously from our POV I’m talking about programming, game design, web content), how about preferentially hiring someone in Chch? Help us to stay here.

We have a contractor who was based in Christchurch, but due to schooling, and damage to their area, has temporarily relocated, continuing his work elsewhere for the time being. We are about to embark on a further contract, and I’m sure no one would begrudge the continuing arrangement with people from Christchurch who are displaced while things get better. ‘Help them get back there’ might be important too.

It’s a shared experience, and one must be careful not to take on ownership of others’ pain.

He said: “Let’s make lots more money – the tax will be way more than any charity you were thinking of paying”.

Are you sure he didn’t say “I’ve got the brains, you’ve got the looks” first?
(You know, I always thought that was the other way round)

But yes, happy with a levy, or to try and generate more tax.

Also thought of the Broken Tooth in Berlin and the Castle of Dresden, both visited in the past. In Dresden’s case, if there wasn’t something exceedingly beautiful on offer in the City centre of a heritage nature, the line up of Eastern block housing would become overwhelming. But, niether Dresden nor Berlin are prone to Earthquakes, to my knowledge, so the discussion on the safety of restoring old buildings, without bringing up to, or beyond, current standards, is not a simple one.

The Civic spent quite a bit on meeting the Earthquake standards, from memory. The council has information on Earthquake Prone Buildings, which I just stumbled on when looking for the information about the Civic.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this.

    Snap.

ETA: It feels like the thread could still do with a bit of 'refreshing'.

Anyone better equipped to do that want to have a go? Anyone?

From Emily J Perkins piece for the Guardian.

"You see people right in the centre of their lives just trying to make one thing work,” she says, “so that they can move on to the next thing."

I can’t find any disagreement with anything you say about that or Emma’s radio piece Gio. Just navigating the path, and the debris keeps falling.

It’s about all of us. Just like it is a duty of all of us to participate how we can in the relief and the reconstruction.

While I agree there are aspects of it that are about all of us, and I haven’t met or spoken to anyone not affected in some way, it was the suffering by degrees that I’m struggling to get my head around. Earlier in the week I looked up ‘vicarious traumatic stress disorder’, and thought that this could apply to lot of people I know, and a lot of media and rescue, and support personnel who have arrived on the scene afterwards to help bring the full impact of it to the world, and start the recovery. But when it gets as far as my own difficulties in coping, kind of start to feel I should harden up, be thankful for what I’ve got, and see what opportunities arise to help further than the seemingly trivial donation made on Wednesday.

We could play ‘we’re all in this together’, but seems Qantas might need a gentle nudge from our new friend Gillard, and I’m sure they won’t be the only ones.

EAT: Emma certainly displayed a generosity of spirit that is quite humbling. Haven't read Emily P's yet, will seek it out.

That’s sort of what I sound like, except apparently I was disappointingly unsweary. I’ll work on it.

Can I just say, while we do appreciate the sentiment about how much we are suffering not having our houses destroyed, our families displaced, our work, livelihoods, schooling, toiletries disrupted, that we'll cope.

This is about 'you'. We would love to be able to do more, but over time we'll hopefully work out how best to do that.

    Take care.

Being away will mean I can stop feeling I need to be staunch and can be as wimpy and weepy as I like, hurrah!

    Definitely. Go well Lilith.

Wow, Emma’s on NatRad, cool! So that’s what you sound like.

    Well done Emma.

This story resonates particularly strongly with me.

More of ‘The Clinic’s’ missing named.

As did several others coming in from family and friends, of a lost father of 4 in the CTV building, and many more besides.

YMMV, but while the more flippant interludes have helped keep us sane (IMO), I for one am not ready to move too far away from the human tragedy.
