    Worrying subtextual inferences may occur...
...in the argot of the "Westie" wouldn't the term
Wellywood infer a Gumboot inspired erection?

    Bless their pointed little ears...
Drinking with the Pixies = Pixielation!

shouldn't it more correctly be WELLYWOODLAND (as per the original HOLLYWOODLAND sign)
    or
    Orc-Land International Airport?

(and Auckland could be "Heavenly Craters"...)

How about a large "WHERE'S WELLY" sign?

meanwhile back in Mosgiel they hope the Hollywood chamber of commerce hasn't noticed them too..

and sheesh the Hollywood sign letters are 14m tall not 3 metres!

  • Hard News: That Summer!,

    Chocks away...
Growing up in Sydenham, I had a wealth of kid-friendly food manufacturers nearby - The Coca Cola factory was just three doors down on Orbell St, Ballins over on Carlyle st, Boons Bakery over by Bradford park / Colombo St, The Tip Top factory on Cass St, Mr Whippy in Sandyford st, just along from United Fisheries, the smell of Mint Sauce wafting from the Boss Sauce factory in Wordsworth st, and over the railway tracks up Montreal St was the motherlode - Aulsebrooks. After Easter was over, cheeky kids could go along and get amongst the left over chocolate from around the egg mold, and bags of broken animal biscuits (with thick icing covering the whole front not just a hint like these days...) - if one went to the Tip Top Factory at the end of the day, one could "help" get rid of the damaged icecreams from the delivery trucks, the factory manager at Coke would let local kids have a free bottle every week and one could get a damaged hot loaf of bread from Boons on the way home from scouts - and at home we had a quarter acre with walnuts, raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, all the standard veges in a huge garden and chooks of course...
    - fool filling Summer days indeed!
Really, I should be obese ....

  • Hard News: The March for Democracy,

    Kim Hill Jong?

Kim Hill gave better than she got on saturday to the 911 freak.

Kim did give a great example of what a closed (and small) mind can do to commonsense... all the poor guy (Richard Gage) was doing was trying to get some questions asked - like a proper investigation - and Kim was all Fox News in the Hen House on him - he never said he had answers, he just said there were questions still unanswered .... whereas she let Rod Carr witter weasel words with out comment...
    - Not Kim Hill's finest moment... in fact she was damn rude... I haven't given up on her completely yet, but I'm damn close...

  • Hard News: The March for Democracy,

    "heterosexual activist".

    maybe we need a heterodox
    but not a doxological hetero
    or a para doxy...
    or any other harsh mistress...

surely a censor should be a sensualist
    not seriously censorious
and have the sense not to censure

  • Busytown: A turn-up for the books,

    lazy satire...
Malcolm Evans in his '50s style editorial cartoon in The Press today (sorry, can't find a link) has Witi Ihimaera wishing he'd written a rock opera so he could get name suppression... I don't think Evans (and therefore the Press editor also) gets it, and compounds his once over lightly approach by spelling his subject's name as "Prof Witi Ihe..."
Sloppy stuff from the journal of record in Chch.
