  • Hard News: Food Show 08,

Sort of. Virgin oil lacks much of the nutritional goodness of extra virgin, and olive pomace oil is muck that actually no one should eat.

I had a win last week - after years of Mrs Llew insisting on buying Extra Light olive oil, and refusing to take my word that she should be buying extra virgin, the DomPost informed her that the "light" has nothing to do with fat content, and all to do with colour & taste. Yay!

Of coursde, I've been using some of the boatload of avacado oil that someone gave me for Christmas anyway.

Andrew your comment about the colours after cataract surgery reminds me of my mother-in-law an artist who painted brightly colored paintings - after her surgery she was horrified ....

Yeah, I've heard that's common with artists who've had cataracts. Over a body of work you can see the decline, and then the sudden compensation when "normal" sight is restored.

From my own experience, when the patch came off after the op, I nearly fell over with information overload & dizziness. I wore sunglasses inside for the first day.

Best thing though, was my eye was so bloodshot - deep, deep crimson, people averted their eyes in the street. I was so disappointed that the 2nd eye didn't go the same way a month later.

One thing we need to really start discussing is population growth. How many people is too many ? Is Auckland full ? IMO, a lot of the value of living here derives from the comparatively low population density. Uncrowded beaches and all that.

I was wondering this just this morning - more people means more infrastructure & I think we're clearly pants at building infrastructure, be it roads, water or power generation. Maybe we need to encourage another million defaulting dads to Oz.

Oh hey - there'd be more women to go around then!

    ;)

Big thanks has to go to Hary Potter for making glasses cool for kids.

    Let's hope no-one remakes Joe 90.

And that raises a question - if Harry's so goddamn magic, how come he needs spectacles?

  • Island Life: Staring into space,

Mum still tells the story of how delighted I was to discover that trees had leaves all the time, rather than being enormous green blobby things that turned into pretty trees with leaves only when you got up really close to them.

Heh - after a history not so unlike that of David's daughter & Emma's son, a few years ago I failed my driver's license test even with my glasses on. I had cataracts it turned out, which were duly removed - and I cannot express in words the astonishment at how different the world seemed - ohmigod, the colours! The clarity!

I had no idea I even had a problem - and I spent a month with one eye "cured" while the other seemed like I was peering through a gauze curtain (a curiously nauseating effect).

So anyway, in the space of a month I went from shortsighted & astigmatic, to ridiculously long sighted. Thank goodness for $2 shop reading specs.

If all else fails... the eyesight test when getting your driver's license will catch any problems.

Probably too late for academic purposes though.
