  • Speaker: Living under bridges, in reply to Russell Brown,

He was an intriguing character. But I found him harder to deal with as he became more of a fringe ideologue. His Waterview commentary – where he was openly disdainful of the residents – was really out of order.

From what I remember, wasn't McShane also a very strong Clash of Civilisations type, like many of his fellow denialists? I've said it before, but there seems to be a proportional relationship between climate denialism and 'fear of a Muslim planet'. Are they both part of a wider Dominionist-industrial complex?

The whole blow-up seems to be a wider symptom of an increasingly polarised and stratified society. It could be thought of as anti-competitive business practices, but applied to people instead of companies.

It would take the death of a friend or the split of a marriage to open their eyes a bit. Once that happened one would see them grow up just a little bit. These kids were not bad kids, just really young and sheltered and from affluent families. Really young and with that came a tad shallow.

    Or sudden bankruptcy.

Pebbles Hooper is a microcosm of the famous-for-being-famous crowd which has the worst of both worlds of old money and new money - the born-to-rule snobbery of the former, and the survivorship bias and crassness of the latter. In short, a neo-feudal heiress.

Meanwhile why do things like the skypath evoke this kind of response? There seems to be something about other people getting something good that causes some folks to go completely off the rails.

These objectors seem to be cut from the same cloth as those who want the RMA thrown on a bonfire, yet will be more than happy to use it if a wind farm or a Manhattan-style apartment is proposed.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Alfie,

Now Hager’s lawyer (Felix Geiringer) says police have broken their undertaking to seal the information taken from Hager’s home, pending a High Court review of the validity of the search warrant. Hager quite rightly (IMHO) maintains that the items seized were covered by journalistic privilege.

Is this tantamount to tampering with evidence or contempt of court under the law?

But every other day, that’s exactly what the Herald decides. So I don’t think their decision here is based on a new commitment to higher editorial standards.

Happy to be proved wrong, so let’s see what happens with the next sports jock or actor or … any other “celeb” who is not employed by the Herald.

Once again, it reinforces the case for a Scandinavian Press Council structure. Journalistic misconduct would then start becoming expensive.

Alfie linked to a Stuff article because the Herald has ignored it.

It's also made TV1. TV3 hasn't yet covered it, only the Ashburton deaths.

And a really great documentary on The Saints’ immortal first album (I’m) Stranded and what came before and after. There’s much to relate to for New Zealanders in its themes of distance and difference:

Hell yes. Around the same time Sir Joh ruled Queensland with an iron fist, Rob Muldoon was wearing the pants in NZ.
