  • Island Life: Good on ya, Paula,

I'm Roger, Fly Me... I'm a taxpayer, Roger me!
It seems the overly entitled Sir Roger "I'm Entitled" Douglas is the uber-beneficiary.
I have never understood this particular perk in perpetuity (90% of all overseas travel expenses for life!!), and see no reason for it to continue.
Is there no ceiling on their travel, no system of justification, just an open cheque book?
Surely this perk is for ex-ministers, so maybe it should be rescinded if he is in office again, one assumes he is making a good salary and has the wit to provide for himself and his dependents, as the rest of us must ...
"My Friend" Roger is gaming the system
    - true beneficiary behaviour apparently...
    - as above so below, eh?

  • Island Life: Good on ya, Paula,

It's logic Jim, but not as we know it...

And yet I know of one recent case locally of a private school trying to drive out kids with special needs, largely I think because they feel they will be targets for bullying

    Cart. Horse. WTF?
That's up there with the Chch City Council's solution process:
ie - 1: too many drunks wandering onto Cambridge Tce by far too many bars
    - solution = close road!
or 2: litter accumulating at base of council rubbish tin that isn't emptied often enough for location
    - solution = get rid of bin altogether!

So no chance of teaching kids about diversity or embracing difference, or even (gob forbid)
not enabling bullying behaviour at private
    schools then? Character building stuff!

    The Great FearFacts Corporation speaks...
Today's Press weighs in on the Bennett Fit of Pique in their Editorial...
    Unsurprisingly, it applauds her actions,
easy game when you are a totally anonymous leader writer, so I guess we have to investigate what benefits the Corporation, as the author by proxy, has received from the state and how
much they pay into its coffers, as well...

The Apaula-ing (call me Hon) Bennett...
    sing along everyone...
The working class can kiss my arse
I've got the boss's job at last...

and do remember - as she says on her website:

I am passionate about ensuring a brighter future for all New Zealanders. As the Minister for Social Development, Employment, and Youth Affairs, I have been given an opportunity to affect positive change in people’s lives, their families and their communities. I intend to get it right.

    and of course -

And I’m proud to be part of a Government that’s willing to listen to ideas from outside the Beehive about how to get New Zealand through this global financial storm.

I guess she'll just have no truck with criticism or robust debate from the lumpen proletariat though...
...and apparently we can blame Murray McCully for misleading young Paula into thinking that she could do anything she pleased...

Just before graduating with a BA in 1997 the opening chapter in Bennett's political life materialised. She got a job as East Coast Bays MP Murray McCully's electorate secretary. As McCully's PA she was not just working with McCully, but with members of the wider National Party as well.
"I couldn't get over their absolute belief there is nothing you cannot do. These were people who had not had the sorts of barriers I had had as a teenage parent....You start feeding off that sort of stuff and very quickly anything becomes possible," Bennett said

according to whoever this fanboy is...

    Didn't she do well!

Paula, Hon, It's Not OK to bully people who disagree with you... whatever happened to:

"There is nothing so compelling as people telling their personal stories....

from her speech December 9 last year launching further initiatives in the It's Not OK campaign - hollow words...

It was the possibility of this kind of abuse of access to computerised information and the machinations of the Muldoonistas that drove Neil Roberts to spray "We have maintained a silence closely resembling stupidity" on a Wanganui toilet wall before making his final fatal explosive statement in front of the national Police Computer Centre in 1982.

Hopefully we are not heading back into those murky fear-filled days...

  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

Upgrade - Log on to blog on, not toboggan...
The general cut and thrust of idea weaving makes threading problematic - but maybe as new ideas or topics come up within a particular blog post, a coloured bullet point could be added, and then the facility to view comments by colour (or similar identifier) - but my minimal understanding of the underlying architecture limits my grasp on what's possible...

This site seems to have some interesting ideas on blog design if it helps - or diverts -
has a bit on Comments sections not too far down ...

The preview doesn't do it because I only see what I think I wrote

The trick I learnt for proofreading (at NBR in the early 80s and at The Press later that decade) was always to read copy expecting it to be wrong so you consciously examine words (and context) for faults... the joy is in finding that it's right
    (or making it so!)

    an Aviary of knavery

Phil, sorry just caught up with the earlier pages, and yes 'twas I in my ongoing hunt for free DVDs from APN... my full offering for a word or phrase for when "people say the same thing as you just said, but get all the praise for it" and the people who do it, was as follows:

    aaah yes ...
    the ongoing problem of
    purloined letters and words

this trade in the blood diamonds
    of conversational gems

    this inappropriate appropriation
has created a veritable aviary of knavery!
    these word rustlers
    with their Cuckoo Echoes are
    nothing less than Word Peckers
    Parrotters and Magpipers
and more than a Mynah irritation...

...but Toucan play at that game
and if these Craven Ravens - like Meatloaf - are Taking the words right out your mouth and Robin you blind - you can make them eat Crow by just being a Hummingbird and making them
    learn the words themselves!
    Give 'em Owl!

for some of that I now own a DVD of Clint Eastwood's The Changeling
