A far more sedate and manageable approach to movement

I had the unpleasant experience of begging to be let off this hideous ride earlier in the day- amusingly each time we spun past the attendant, i yelled "stop!!". Eventually he just grinned and flipped the bird. And did not stop. Brilliant!

  • Speaker: In Tribute: Peter Gutteridge…, in reply to Jonathan Ganley,

    Thanks Jonathan- a good find.

Just watched this hauntingly beautiful clip of Peter Gutteridge busking in Dunedin, which was posted elsewhere in recent days

  • Speaker: In Tribute: Peter Gutteridge…,

Very sad, but a lovely piece Grant.

This year there were two firsts for me- despite having lived in Dunedin most of my life, and seen Snapper whenever possible in their "heyday", I had never had a conversation with Peter. However I met him when I bumped into him and a mutual friend earlier this year, and one thing that struck me was his positivity about about some of the "newer" Dunedin music - he was particularly enthused about Kane Strang.
The other, more significant moment, was seeing him play with the Clean at Chicks- taking forever to plug in his amp, tune his guitar, while a bemused/amused and ever patient band and crowd waited . . . and then a quite brilliant couple of songs, including a majestic "Point that thing". It was a tear in the eye moment then, now even more so.
    Sadly missed.

  • Hard News: The Ladi is a champ,

Ladi 6 is fantastic, and thoroughly deserves the win.

I am guessing most of you will have already seen this superb track from "The Adults"- Ladi 6, Jon Toogood, Shayne Carter and Gary Sullivan. Gorgeous.

<quote>As fhar as his tanty over the mandate goes, I'm curious, what was Laws whineing margin in his previous elections?
My google skills have failed me, Anyone know?<quote>

Unfortunately in 2007, Laws got more than 50% of the vote . . .
he got 10459, and the total combined vote against him was 8933- including invalid and blank votes. Nearest opponent got 7051

  • Voting Local 2010,

"No more Michael Guest. Only Dunedinistas will appreciate that."

Yes, we do appreciate it. . . . but minus a Guest and Walls, and plus a Vandervis feels somewhat of a disappointment.

Great that Cull won the mayoralty, but his council still looks far too familiar- with notable exceptions (Jinty McTavish being the most exciting.)

What the Dunedin election has confirmed to me, is that it is much harder to get on to council than it is to stay. Once you are there, barring some major negative publicity (Guest), it is pretty likely you will stay there. Bill Acklin?? John Bezett?? Their only claim to fame is that they are on council, and keep their heads down when the big debates are under way.

Overall, a disappointing result in Dunedin.

    Russell said:

And yet ... Margaret Pope, who wrote the speech (but not, obviously, its brilliant extemporising), was there on the night it was delivered, and subsequently lived with David Lange till he died, was totally okay with it, and thought that Lange would have been too.

So it's not simple. Which is why I thought it was worth discussing.

Yeah, these things are never simple- and you are right, it is worth discussing.

I guess it is hard to assess the motivations for Margaret Pope agreeing to the speech being used to sell beer, or why Lange might have agreed if he was still alive.

The speech is a powerful moment in defining a New Zealand identity to a world audience in an enduring way, and perhaps one of the first non-sporting examples of that. It is a moment many of us will remember with a certain pride in what Dyan eloquently described as us feeling “brilliant and rather heroic by association.”

Ego- of Pope as the author- and Lange’s desire to be remembered and loved (despite heading a government that economically devastated a lot of lives through their term and paved the way for the further rightward lurch of the subsequent National Govt), could in some way explain why they would be happy to have the speech again put in front of people, albeit in this context. In some ways, it has parallels with artists (assuming they hold the rights) allowing corporates to use their songs in advertising campaigns- although there is undoubtedly a financial incentive in those instances. I assume that the recording of the speech is in the public domain, so no payment or actual permission was required before using?

It kinda grates how a brewery is trying to associate itself with a progressive political movement (anti-nuclear) after the fact. Is their next tag-line going to be “Steinlager- supporting a nuclear free nz since 1987”- or would even they find that a bit too tacky?

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

Think the use of the Lange speech by a brewery is pretty tacky, both in terms of the constant (mis)appropriation of culture for commercial ends, but also using an acknowledged alcoholic to sell beer.
