TVNZNews: Officer in command Dave Lawrie says he does not believe the CTV site is now surviveable. #eqnz
My heart is liquifacting.

Ultimately USAR is USAR. A collapsed building is a collapsed building, and the training is pretty standardised. More people means more simultaneous rescues, more people to rotate on and off the piles.
Indeed.
And your last two posts made me laugh. I don't believe in either Mr Key, or Ms Kuini Erihapeti, but I do respect their sincerity as human beings and decency in this situation. Unless you acknoledge that, it's pretty hard to make sense of the world.

They certainly don't, which is why their offer of experts in earthquake rescue could be the most useful of all. If we have the wit to accept.
They have, as I understand. California and Taiwan USR teams are also on their way. Singapore, Australia, and UK less earthquake experienced, but very gratefully received.

when the police start arresting people in whangarei we'll all admit he was right.
You know what, I almost tweeted a response identical to that, using Whangerei too. Then I thought better.
Cause, y'know, when the 2nd city is on its knees, there might because to use civil defence powers outside the boundaries of Canterbury. I appreciate his defence of the rule of law, but the good and perfect aren't always on the same page. Things are far from perfect this week.
CERRA has problems, and reconstruction will need to be done right. But this is an emergency on a huge scale.

nice to see the financial types are as "practical" as some MSM.
Well, at least that's their job - and they're hardly going to sell Fletchers down. Journalists who can't think of legitimate questions have no such excuse.
-
Paul, perhaps it will be on the TV3/TVNZ websites?
-
Let me take that back. People are dying in the rubble, and the press gallery are asking questions about VISITORS TO THE FUCKING RUGBY WORLD CUP.
Vulturous scum.

God, John Key just took me to the edge of tears with his speech. Exceptional circumstances.

With the live feeds I saw yesterday, I was pleasantly impressed by the lack of "shove a camera down the throat of the crying woman" vox pops.
Some of that was due to police keeping the media away from victims - and they're also keeping media away from collapsed buildings where people are surviving and dying. But yeah, remarkably tasteful coverage. John Campbell and Hilary Barry particularly have been outstanding.
