  • Southerly: Wedding Bells,

I'm with you all the way on this one!
It is great that people can make their own rules to a much greater extent now. I've been to a wedding in a cave, a wedding on a cliff top and a civil union, and all were fabulous.

"I quite liked the star ratings given to films broadcast on tele in The Listener, for example.

Where else do people look? Or have you all given up on the teev?"

Well, Karen, my only advice is NOT to look in the DomPost film review section. Phillip Wakefield lost his remaining shreds of credibility last week when he gave the execrable 'The Da Vinci Code' a four star rating .. the film was even worse than the book, and that is quite something.

Am I the only person here to have not loved Under the Mountain? (the book, that is; haven't seen the televersion).
I adore almost all Maurice Gee's fiction, but I just couldn't muster up the the requisite suspension of belief for Under the Mountain. It just got sillier and sillier.

Jolisa, I loved Wallace Stegner's ode to the dump - glorious! Thank you!
This essay would have pride of place in an anthology of dump literature. We 've also recently enjoyed Stig of the Dump, by Clive King; and I think Margaret Mahy may have set a story or two at the dump.

I grew up in a small town, and my brother and I had free rein of the town rubbish dump! Andrew Henry would have loved it.

Yes, the name of the Sensible Sentencing Trust is up there with the Moral Majority... take that, you immoral minority!

Au contraire, Juha, this blog is where the pedants come out to play!
A beauty just heard on Kathryn Ryan's programme: she asked someone (apropos of rest homes) whether the guidelines were 'adequate enough'.
