  • Cracker: Mo' Better Reason,

You can forget about Key. His big gig in November is a trip to Singapore, ostensibly for APEC, but really to get Obama'd again ("almost seven minutes AND he's heard of the Conchords!" - all NZ media, November 15).

Grow a Mo and it could all go horribly wrong.

"Mr President, nice to meet you again!"

"Er ... the accent's kinda familiar but I can't quite place the face. Are you the Nova Scotia guy?"

"Ha ha, good one!" (looks around nervously) "Guyon, you really aren't gonna use that, are you?"

  • MMP: This Time It's Binding,

    2011: Referendum

    2014: Referendum

2017: First election, using new system.

Prediction: Labour to win absolute power (sic) on a minority vote. (Anti-MMP crowd: "D'oh!")

Actually my real prediction is that we'll keep MMP. But, you know, it would be funny ...

Gareth, it's like a newspaper spoiler. If Maori TV had exclusive (free-to-air) coverage of all the All Blacks' pool games, then people might get into the habit of watching the channel, then stick with them for the 'big' games, from quarter-final on.

As it is, Maori TV won't get any traction from this at all.

Looks like Maori TV have got squashed.

The All Blacks' quarter-final defeat against England will be on One, Three, Maori (and Sky). All the knockout games will be shared, and the opener.

So "leading the bid" means pool games only.

(Edit: No, not even that. Scoop reports New Zealand vs France (pool) will be live on TV3 as well as Maori Television. So Maori TV just get the ABs versus Canada, and "Asian qualifier" - probably Japan.)

Tourism NZ should have come up with this one. Global news coverage, hours of footage, panoramic views, happy ending, balloon on E-bay. Better than a hundred giant rugby balls or Lettermans.

    More from San Diego:

"Thanks to my players, today I was consecrated as a coach," he said defiantly, during post-match remarks laced with profanities. (AP)

Are you taking notes, Mr Henry?

    Maradona speaks:

"They [journalists] treat me like dirt, but we qualified with honour. I dedicate this to all of the Argentinian people and my family, but one sector does not deserve it, because they treated me like garbage."

Now that's a post-match interview. Beats the heck out of "full credit ... got plenty to work on ... thanks to sponsors".

Argentina have qualified. Forty million people now having group sex. Diego Maradona somewhere underneath them.

Ooh, a football thread on PA. There is hope yet!

Bahrain will qualify for the World Cup after earning their place in Asia, seeing off the likes of China and Iran. Or - let me dream - NZ will defeat Bahrain. The likes of Sweden and Poland will miss out, and feel hard done by, but really, Asia is not over-represented at the World Cup. Oceania may be over-represented in Asia, but that is a separate issue, for Asia, not the Europeans. And it's not as though NZ is a privileged football nation: players from small countries in Europe can play in bigger countries' professional leagues with no bureaucratic obstacles at all, just by turning up, and that access is the key to improving the national side.

If the All Whites qualify for South Africa, and lose three games, it will still mean more, wider, global media coverage than a hundred Bathursts or Bledisloes. New Zealanders are (contrary to our media cheerleading) invisible in world sport - see grand slam tennis, golf majors, Formula One, NBA, Tour de France, track & field, etc (Valerie is a joy, but nobody else notices). So let's make the most of it, if ... if ... arise, Sir Ricky, Sir Ryan, Sir Shane.

And the respective broadcasters are meeting right now in search of a solution.

The stumbling block will be that all three broadcasters want the All Blacks' quarter-final, but none want the final.
