Southerly: Now I Am Permitted, in reply to
For what it’s worth, I completely agree that the current system of builder registration, etc. is stupid. I’d much rather have any house of mine built by my father – an ‘unqualified’ builder (amongst other things) with many years experience – than some of the Master Builders operating in CHCH right now.
Ahh! experience counts for something, except in politics where its all made up as the fucktards roll along

Hard News: A GCSB Roundup, in reply to
I very much imagine Key would have preferred not to do it on this occasion.
Oh the poor man! having to do something he would have preferred not too. Must be why he comes across as a complete fuckwit.
The sound is absolute rubbish and yet there are a forest of mics in the room. What? Wasnt the Scoop camera allowed to plug into the sound distribution box? The cameraman didnt have a long enough lead? Or everyone was rooted to the spot unable to do anything about it, lest they be seen to be moving a limb in the presence of this magisterial gathering? -
Keeping better government data better than the government
This system is broken and only suits those who want to dominate everything under the guise of being even handed. Its hierarchical and a failure.
looking at Horizontalism at the mo' There has to be a better future -
Field Theory: What goes with beer and sports?, in reply to
Well yes, but I had a target in mind…. the Eden Park thread may be closer to the mark tho’
And Rich I wasnt only talking about how people die...numerically.... -
IBM would sell this knowledge to corporate customers with an interest in knowing what was about to happen before it actually happened.
Only stupid dicks in corporations need to pay for this kind of information

There’s something about giving each other shit and waiting for the terrible jokes and complaining about the commentators that really bonds you with your friends.
just the usual unconscious most of the time innocuous social ingrouping/outgrouping kind of behaviour most of the country indulges in. Just occassionally someone loses their life because of it. Cue; wringing of hands, a little public mental anguish. Then back to doing it all over again.

Speaker: Generation Zero: Let's Grow Up, in reply to
I was heading off at the pass the argument that poverty is necessary to drive any usefulness out of people.
It would be probably much harder to find people to do unpleasant work.
Who's making that argument?
Its always hard to find people to clean toilets(for example) unless its well paid.
And has all this idle time been of benefit? That is open to question. A lot of dubious benefit has ensued from this "idle time" never forget that.
We sit here now, perhaps pissing advances made to "life styles" away.
It seems about time humanity pulled its collective head it, we arent alone on this planet, never forget. Just (it seems at times) alone in the universe. Only because we dont know how to communicate with other life forms. -
Speaker: Generation Zero: Let's Grow Up, in reply to
Since the idle rich are where the lion’s share of the most important ideas, art, science and other high level goods have come from historically, it’s not like this would be a terrible thing.
Really? I would question your interpretation of history

This is beautiful and brilliant and it gives me much to think about.
Ok then.
aspects of someone’s life have been written about and published in a manner that I personally found a little uncomfortable.
That's your problem. Own it, or do something with it. Figuring out why you feel that might be a start.
Then there is Work & Income New Zealand.
Yes, there it sits that institutionalised insult to the wondrous human capacity to show compassion and care for our fellow beings. This is what should be driving us, our motivation to grow as a conscious species, not money or even worse that insult to us all "free markets". Even the current acronym seems calculated to insult the now called "clients" who must turn to it for financial help. And that is about the only kind of assistance it seems capable of doing, even then it is half hearted, begrudging. As if ready to be snatched away if you don't fulfil their "criteria" to the letter.
As our supposedly grown up society pushes us into ever narrowing, easily defined categories for ease of implementation of policy dreamed up by those whose only concern is to get themselves elected and thus strut the world stage displaying their cardboard cut out virtuousness for all to approve of. And as they despoil this planet, our birthplace and home.
It ranks up there with that other anachronism of an institution based in this capacity of ours. But now just sits like a relentless harpy fingers poised close to our collective purse. Yes you guessed it, organised religions. Once a place of refuge and salvation. Birthplace for outpouring of our finer thoughts and sentiments. Now a soothing salve for all kinds of lunacy, from mindless ravings, to the well off indulging their numb skullery and padding their nests with whatever luxury them deem necessary for a comfortable existence, while dropping 20 cents in the collection plate.Yes I feel sympathy for such as Paul. Thank you Mr Herkt
