Hard News: Grokking things by being places, in reply to
Oh Matthew. That is ghastly.

Re people not voting. Was anyone else aware that Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t vote? We’ve been talking alot of election politics this last couple of weeks at work, and today I asked one of our teaching students if she was going to vote (she’s 18), and she told me that this little fact about JW’s. “We don’t get involved in politics” she says. I was so angry, I had to go outside and have a cigarette. (It was lunchtime, don’t worry). So now we know who some of the 20%-30% of people who don’t vote every three years are.

That would be how I define it, I guess. But no books. Just sex.

Hard News: A week being a long time in politics, in reply to
In my house, it's big mama that rules the roost.

This lover/book thing is so interesting to me. The word "lover" possibly needs exploring as it obviously means different things to different people.

Hard News: Criminalising Journalism, in reply to
I guess that's right, Matthew. Just more examples of people looking at Key and his cronies holding up bright and shiny promises - despite bright and shiny not being delivered on, and despite the very real probability of things getting even more dire with a second term - and being dazzled. It's witchcraft. That can be the only possible explanation as to this continued national fit of stupidity.

It's fascinating to me who has been entranced by Key. Last night, I had a discussion with a very dear friend of mine who is a fire officer - a public service job, one would think a traditional labour stronghold and they're on strike for pete's sake - and he expressed great dismay at comments made by some of his subordinates, young men, who had voiced admiration for the PM.(It went something like this. "I can't believe..." "I know!" "I'm so frustrated." "I know!" etc) He also brought up the point that he thinks we have been almost deliberately illinformed about MMP. As he said, most people don't know what the alternatives are, so when it comes to the referendum, how many people are going to leave the 2nd box unticked? It was something I hadn't thought about.

It does take an extraordinary amount of focus. Especially when, like me, you read far too much, far too quickly, and don't consciously remember most of what you read. It's a wonderful exercise!

Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to
I am afraid I have resigned myself to a further 3 yrs of a Government I neither voted for, nor have any confidence in. In my very humble opinion, Labour took too long to get their shit together for this one. And that saddens me, greatly. That being said I will be spending election night with a very lovely friend, and her very lovely husband, and the other denizens of Labour Mt Roskill, and celebrating Labour's wins, whatever they may be. Hopefully, one of them will be that this very fine man who is attached to my very fine friend will be in Parliament after that night. Otherwise, I'm just holding on for 2014.
