  • Hard News: ffunnell Up!,

Is anyone else a bit weirded out by the new "A Sign of Hope" banner ads that have popped up recently on PA System?

It appears to be promoting the website of some fruity new age group who believe some star is signalling the return of "the World Teacher". And as far as I can tell, it is not a pisstake.

I'm actually a bit offended by it - the assumption that as a member of the PA System community, I would somehow be interested in this new age bullshit.

I feel that Lhaws is probably writing a column on those lines and will struggle to avoid intertextuality with your version.

Hey, you leave Lhaws' intertexistezes out of this!

  • Island Life: A week in the life of that…,

They actually call one a texta, and textas is plural.... for exactly the same reason someone in NZ might say "Vivid" or "Sharpie" instead of "marker". It is a brand name.

I swear that marker pens always used to be called Vivids, and didn't start to be called Sharpies until Sharpie started their television campaign.

    Fuck that. Vivid 4 life.

  • Up Front: Newsflash: Women Have Eyes,

It seems like the difference between the models in Filament and the sort of guys you normally see in teh pr0nz is that the Filament fellows don't look like dumb boofheads with anger-management issues. They look the the sort of guy who would be quite nice to have as a boyfriend.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

I have no tolerance for people who say they hate "reality TV", simply because it includes so much television that's so different - game shows, talent shows, fly-on-the-wall docos, and about health, romance, fitness, sport, etc. Hating bad television is one thing, but hating something just because of its production style, regardless of quality is a bit shit.

It's all very well to blame the tabloids for the Susan Boyle backlash, but could it also have been due to the fact that, well, her voice was nice but it wasn't outstanding?

Much of the appeal of her first appearance on the show was the strongly emphasised contrast between fat, frumpy, hairy, dowdy, spinster Susan and the thin, sexy, Botoxed, slick, shiny, glamorous world of the telly.

She played her card early. You can only be surprised by the "Wow! She looks frumpy but sings beautifully!" thing once.

So with the thrill of the new gone, all that was left was her voice and that started to get old fast.

Also, here's Charlie Brooker on the Boyle phenomena:

There was a wee delay. It'll happen.

Srsly, it's going to happen even if it means having fish 'n' chips in Waitangi Park.

  • Field Theory: How I Roll (pt1),

I like bowling but my problem is my fingers. My mother and my brother have long thin fingers, my dad and I have short fat fingers. So I always have trouble finding a bowling ball that is light enough to be able to wield comfortably, but with holes big enough to fit my fingers in. And, it seems, the lighter the ball, the smaller the holes.

So when I start off, I'll have a ball that's the right weight and with holes big enough. But after a few bowls, my hands swell slightly and my fingers start to get stuck in the holes, meaning that instead of elegantly sliding off my hand, the bowl will hurl to the land with a giant *thunk*, and everyone looks at me like I've suddenly turned into some sort of embarassing drunk cousin who's just decided to start throwing the ball at the lane instead of rolling it down it.

Obviously the answer is some form of anorexia coupled with strength training.

Or I could just not bowl.

  • Speaker: The Telecom XT Discussion,

Actually, I'd welcome all the affiliated folk to do that for this discussion. Including you, Mr Brislen.

To be fair, when Paul is posting here as a representative of Vodafone, he does sign his posts with that information.

But he's been a PA System member right from the start, a PA Speaker contributor, posts personally, and isn't exactly a stranger to those of us who are regulars around here.

It's the newbie Telecom reps who need to take that extra step and give us a bit of background behind their posts.
