  • Hard News: Warning: contains pieces of Apple,

I just don't even use iTunes at all (unless I have to get an iPhone software update). It takes so long to do anything, and I'm terrified that it will get a bee in its bonnet and 'sync' something I don't want it to and poof, there goes my 160GB of music. I really hate it.

What then do you use, D?

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

I wouldn't go as far as saying the sound quality is crap but it is far from the best you can get.

    It's true.

    Another piece of the puzzle:

South Canterbury Finance's collapse appears to have been caused in part by rich investors pulling out cash to get below new limits for the government's deposit guarantee scheme.

Trustee Executors regional manager Yogesh Mody said "many investors" with deposits above the $250,000 limit that will apply to the revised scheme from October 12 had been "rearranging" their investments to get below that figure ahead of the deadline.

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

Anyone want to buy my 2nd Generation 16GB iPod Touch?

Sorry, no, but I'll use this occasion to mention that I'm looking for a cheapish non-Touch iPod - 4 or 8 Gb, I guess - for my little cousin, up to $100.

Help me to help this young lad out so that he is not forced to grow up in a household containing only Shania Twain and Westlife.

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

    Feature comparisons here.

Once you get deep inside the settings there is actually a lot more than that; admittedly mostly minor things, but probably twice as many in total.

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

I recently jailbroke* my iPod by installing ROCKbox OS.

Whilst it doesn't work quite as smoothly as iTunes, and crashes occasionally, what has amazed me is just how crippled the machine is under iTunes. There are literally scores more functions now available to me.

The fact that Apple asks me to buy hardware add-ons for functions that the machine is in fact capable of doing without them (such as recording, ie) doesn't impress me much.

But I still love it (even though I also hate it).

*Is it still "jailbreaking" if it's an iPod?

  • Hard News: Long will be the lunches,

Only a year earlier, an English guy turned up in the 6th form (his family had emigrated from UK) with what was then a banned audio tape of Cook and Moore doing some hilarious improvised stuff whilst pissed out of their heads in the early/mid 70s. Can't quite remember the title, but still remember most of the dialogue.

    Derek and Clive.

I think it might be the other way round.

I think you're right, Steven. 'Twas the odd way they phrased it, I think, that gave me that impression.

Radio news now reporting that English expects to get only $600m back, so - if correct - now it looks like we might be in the hole for $1.2b!
