• Hard News: Prospects,

    Or Duynhoven, for that matter.

In my dream of dreams, I would have loved to see Anjum's name there. Next time, maybe...

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Sorry - that was a very cryptic comment from me. It was a response to the idea that Labour voters gave a tactical vote to Winston Peters. I really, really doubt that, at all. I think many Labour voters, including me, found Labour's adherence to Peters just too much to stomach. It's why I ended up voting Maori.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I doubt it. I think there's just plenty of people who like the racism he preaches.

Meh. We just went straight to electionresults.org.nz, and supplied our own commentary, which has gotten wittier as the night has gone on. Or maybe that's just the wine speaking...

  • Hard News: Prospects,

So... seeing as we all shared our 'where we voted' stories, I'm up for a 'what I'm doing while the results come in story' which is eating roast chicken (free range), stuffed with lightly sauted onions, fresh breadcrumbs and fresh chopped thyme and oregano, together with roast vegies (potato, sweet potato - no kumara, alas, aubergine, capsicum and red onion) and fresh green beans, washed down with a pinot grigio, and anxiously watching the vote see-sawing back and forth between Stephen Franks and Grant Robertson. I suspect that one won't be over until the specials come in.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I am really surprised and curious that you voted Maori Party Deborah

For reasons. It surprised me too.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I voted in Adelaide earlier this week, and took the girls with me. Part of their civic education. Grant Robertson (Labour) in Wellington Central for me, and the Maori party.

Now we wait. We're taking the girls to the local Christmas parade, which promises to be nightmarish - 350,000 people coming and an attempt at a world record Mexican wave. My inner introvert is recoiling, but there's a limit to how much curmudgeonly behaviour we can inflict on our children.

  • Busytown: I believe in miracles,

A couple of other thoughts to add:

My girls have grown up knowing that the PM can be female because goddamit, the PM, as long as they have been alive, has been female. Think of the generation who will grow up knowing that the President of the US can be black, because, d'oh, he is black. That's very powerful.

My dad said that the last time he remembered this sense of hope was when JFK, the first Catholic president, was elected in 1963.
