The referendum petition began before the law was passed. Then there was the late Clark-Key compromise, but the people gathering signatures carried on regardless, in the guise of opposing something that had since changed.
So the referendum question could not simply call for a repeal, because the law did not exist at the time the petition started. I am not opposed to the principle of CIRs - who knows when we might need that tool? - but there is a serious problem when people are being asked to sign not only a petition, but a blank cheque.

Meanwhile, National continue to show their candidate all the love and support she needs.
Judy Kirk, Party President, on Melissa Lee:
"She is emotional. I have seen that on a couple of occasions when she has gone to speak and it may be her culture."

In any case, Brent Edwards on RNZ news just reminded listeners that Key dumped Worth on the basis of the case being investigated by the police which Labour had no role in whatsoever.
Some quality spinning from the Nats on this, and I suspect it'll work. Key has decisively finished off Richard Worth - what a leader! - while Goff has cruelly finished off Richard Worth - what a cad!
The small matter of the public not actually being told why Worth has gone - as Minister, and as MP - well, that's just details, apparently.

As somebody said during a spate of "men overboard" in the UK, in the 1990's: Tory MPs believe in personal responsibility - except in their resignation statements.

A properly functioning democracy would see such allegations put in front of an independent inquiry post haste. That is where Goff should have focused his attention.
Yes, I hope Prime Minister Goff takes action.
All that power to do the right thing, and he just doesn't use it. I think we should throw him out at the next election. We want a properly functioning democracy, and Goff's just not delivering.

I know next to nothing about this subject, but for those interested, here's some news from the European elections:
Exit polls in Sweden suggest the Pirate Party, which advocates the shortening the duration of copyright protection and allowing non-commercial file-sharing between individuals, has won a seat with 7.4% of the vote. (BBC website)

Around about now, Paul Henry should be fluffing up the cushion for his pal John.
Summary for those who missed it:
Paul: Richard Worth? Mt Albert? Politics?
John: My son bought my tie. Do you like my tie, Paul? Look at the tie, people, the tie!

No, list MPs are MPs, in their own right.
For example, if ACToids took over the Labour Party caucus (as if that could ever happen!), then the new regime could demote all list MPs with unsound views. Very messy.
The party has enough power already, picking the list positions. Don't give them even more.

Some light relief: Wendy Petrie, guilty.

I saw this live, as did countless others no doubt. Quite funny, in an OMG sort of way. At least it was before the Bain verdict.

Whole thing is descending into a Monty Python-scripted episode of Dad's Army...
It should be made into a fillum.
