What income and equity level do you set as "Very Rich"?
As an example would you consider Willie Jackson very rich and someone not worthy of respect?

What income and equity level do you set as "Rich"?.
Every tax dollar taken and spent unwisely is a dollar denied the humble have nots.

The economics problems are - not compounded by the Rich Listers – the lack of growth and leadership vacuum and other stuff I bang on about here from time to time.

Looking at Legislation we have "hate speech" defined as a form of disrimination under the Human Rights Act 1993, namely
s61 - whioh makes it unlawful to publish or distribute what could be regarded as"hate speech" - "racial disharmony".
&
s131 - details the offences for which "racial disharmony" creates liability.
The liability in my mind should be limitless - in that it should be set by the courts.having regard to the impact or potential impact.

This is news only for the week ending Friday July 29, 2011
The minimum wage needs a lift - it is the best way to boost an economy that has been mismanaged along the lines of a wait and see approach on the basis that it can't stay bad forever.
Nationally one in every five children lives in an impoverished household.
"The young kids, who have dropped out of school, who don't want to go to school, who have fried there brains on marijuana, who are basically only fit for labouring jobs or unskilled labour they are the ones who would be ”souped” (?) up if we had a lift in the minimum wage"
Is a cliché that doesn't stand up to close examination and as a justification to keep the low minimum wage it is just bullshit.
To do "labouring" or unskilled labour - one also needs to apply ones wits and also possess a broad skill set. To retain a decent labourer you would need to be paying somewhere over $15 an hour. The minimum wage is ???
Problems are - domestically the economy has shrunk - and the high NZ dollar is killing the non agricultural export sectors including tourism.

Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to
To you and Giovanni,
Media need to set/subscribe to a standard and self regulate its own code to a major degree, where that mechanism fails then there is a role for the “state” to play.
We have the BSA, Race & Human Rights Commission(ers) the BSA & the NZ Press Council and failing that the Courts.
Hateful speech should not be suppressed, but countered with yet more speech.
The state has the role to play in defining what is objectionable, offensive and hateful - and to dealing with those "publications" and publishers/issuers where that material is criminal - hate speech being a crime.
It is debatable whether any counter speech would have prevented Breivik's violence.
I have no answers for his actions. -

* if we must simplify politics to geometry, I prefer the two dimensions of economic and social rather than the single Left vs Right.
That is a view that I share - furthermore IMHO the left and right are irrelevant and a distraction of sorts that fog the real issues.

Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.

I can't see that his "hard stand" does anything other than put the boot into victims and their families.whilst generating column inches for him.
Providing youth with a future and access to opportunity is something that he needs to work at rather than mouthing off.
Talking to my mother aged 80, her view on his thoughtless comments are that it shows the lack of integrity and compassion that exists in parliament/politics today.
She further considers that NZ has for her lifetime been "hard" for and on youth finding their way.
