  • Hard News: Mo' Indexing,

Sez Brown, with none o' them fancy degree things at all ...

don't fret. checked with a stats guy here at work, and he says oversampling is good as long as it's handled correctly

  • Hard News: Mo' Indexing,

They deliberately oversampled Maori and Pacific populations in the Te Rau Hinengaro survey, which makes the overall sample large.

can we have a please explain?

a large sample size is de rigeuer. do you mean that they overlaid some stats to inflate impacts? </che exposes lack of knowledge about statistical analysis, again>

  • Hard News: Mo' Indexing,

Another headline for a report on the same data might read: "1 in 25 NZers try cocaine at some point in lifetime."

To which my reaction would be, "Meh".

    same.

i'd love to see if there is a correlation between anti-drug hysteria and drug consumption.

anecdotal evidence would suggest, "yes". how many kids do you know who've smoked pot only because it's illegal?

  • Readers' Tips,

my final tip. get yourself 2 goldfish swimming in a reasonable-sized bowl.

let the water turn fairly green before you change it, then use that poo-water to feed your potted vegetables.

high in nitrogen and phosphates, that poo-water.

  • Readers' Tips,

And where's all the Feijoas for crissakes?

my tip is to walk around your neighbourhood. i did this in melbourne and found one tree. then i just pinched everything that hung over the fenceline.

also works for figs, apples, plums, peaches...

i'll buck the trend in solidarity with michael, here's a recipe for a vegetarian, how to cure the flu pasta.

    it's an absolute cracker.

I've always got the option of turning my attention elsewhere for the next four to five months.

we all know that isn't true.

  • Speaker: What goes on tour,

There's a critical mass dimension to this too; one or two arseholes might not be enough to make a group go feral, four or five does but.

that's pretty much it. i used to work dispatching taxis, and hen's nights were *feared* by most drivers.

but again, not excusing the behaviour of the blokes in question here.

there's also huge pressure to be a Team and All Guys Together, you know, bros before hos. Which basically puts women in the category of "there for sex".

take my word for it, this isn't even exclusively a sports thing.

i've know gangs of public servants who behave the same way...

  • Speaker: What goes on tour,

I think it's men in team situations full stop

actually if we're talking about dodgy behaviour it's people in group-think mode full stop.

group-think encourages people to do all kinds of stupid and/or outright vicious things </not excusing the stupidity of these blokes actions>
