So how's it going over at TV3 since they killed off New Zealand's favourite nightly current affairs show? To be honest, not all that well. Story hasn't rated anywhere near as highly as Campbell did, even when he was having a 300,000+ bad day.
In the 25-54-year-old group... TV3's performance in the 7-7.30pm slot for that demographic has worsened since Story launched. That time-slot attracted an average of 97,000 people in that age group in the four weeks before the launch of Story. Since then, that figure has declined to 84,000 viewers.
Oh well. I guess they have the partly NZ on Air funded 3D, prime time on Sunday nights. Christie & Co killed half an hour of news to make way for their all-new current affairs show, so you'd expect it would at least maintain the eyeballs it inherits from the news. But nope! Last Sunday's 3 News delivered 252,550 viewers which dropped away to 209,320 during 3D according to Nielsen. So that one's not working either.
The PM reckons people are only looking for entertainment, so let's shift that bugger to late Monday night and fill the slot with something fresh, imaginative and entertaining. Let's call it 7 Days of Sport -- which is, not surprisingly, a hybrid of 7 Days and sports programming.
Hosted by a different prominent sportsperson each week, the show will feature two teams captained by the sports-fan stars of Friday night's 7 Days including Dai Henwood, Urzila Carlson and Ben Hurley.
How underwhelming. A foul whiff of increasing desperation seems to be pervading the Christie/Wheldon camp.

Auditor-General Lyn Provost has released her report into the MPI rubber-stamping the illegal export of swap kauri on a massive scale. And guess what.
...she had seen "no evidence that the Ministry is allowing the export of illegal timber or timber products".
So that's alright then.

I see Mediaworks have announced their new "joint venture" with Rachel Glucina... a site called 'Scout' which I won't bother linking to. It's as if her role in Dirty Politics and her unethical behaviour towards Amanda Bailey never happened. And yet further proof that Mediaworks sees its target demographic as PL minus -- (slightly below pond life).

For a glimpse of where the MSM is heading, check out this Gawker story by a disillusioned former Daily Mail journalist. Tales of constantly plagiarising articles from other media, making up "facts" and journos being forced to prostitute themselves to churn out endless clickbait.
While the Daily Mail has always been a bottom-feeder publication, there are definite similarities with the decline in standards seen in our own MSM. Journalism used to be an honest profession.

Gareth Morgan also has strong feelings about the $27m sham flag selection process John Key is overseeing.
The Flag Consideration Panel's final four is outstanding for offering virtually no diversity of choice for the voting public and that is a tragedy, one the group should have seen would make them the target of ridicule. If the Prime Minister's instructions to the panel had been "pick me the four best silver fern-based designs that you think the public would go for" I doubt whether the Panel's short list would have been any different to that they came up with.
Therein lies the tragedy - the public have due cause to think that this has been a jack up, that the Panel, whether consciously or otherwise it doesn't matter, has decided to come up with exactly what the Prime Minister wants rather than facilitating a process providing the public genuine choice. As such it has undermined the whole idea of a democratic approach. "Choose which one you like as long as it's one of the Prime Minster's silver fern favourites".
"Sycophantic" is not too strong a depiction of the approach.
Incidentally, I hadn't seen the winner of Morgan's flag design competetion until today, and it looks surprisingly similar to the Red Peak design favoured by many people -- only two colours have been transposed. At least he used professional designers and typographers on his judging panel. Gareth says he'll support Red Peak.

RNZ has published a DIY flag kit which includes lamingtons, gumboots and even a laser kiwi. There are even korus and stars aplenty.

I disagree Steven. It would be saying "I vote for Key's 4th choice" which is hardly a protest, especially as the odds are pre-loaded against hypnoflag.

As Katherine pointed out earlier, the STV system effectively negates this option. Assuming fern-fans vote fronds 1,2, 3 then hypnoflag doesn't stand a chance. And your hynoflag vote would then be counted as just another kiwi engaging with Key's chosen process.
Winnie's KOF suggestion seems like the best option so far.
