  • OnPoint: Bar brawls aren't my thing,

    There's an old saying:
If it happens once, its a mistake
If it happens twice, that's clumsiness (or incompetence)
If it happens three times, you're doing it on purpose!

  • OnPoint: Fisking for Asians,

One reason the meth is so popular is the huge marketing campaign behind it. You'd be hard pushed to find a day's Herald without at least one mention of "P", and seldom does a week go by without something in the TV news about how widespread & popular the drug is.

As the old saying goes - _Any publicity is good publicity as long as they spell your name right_, and how could they misspell P?

  • OnPoint: Fisking for Asians,

Yamis, Oooh, yes please, send me overseas, somewhere European by preference, I can dig up genealogical excuses for just about anywhere. Somwhere scenic with good beer and beautiful women. If you go back far enough, I could make it to Italy (thanks Julius), or Scandinavia (Greatx10^3 uncle Erik?).

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

I'm reminded of a tried and true parenting technique that I've used on many an occasion (don't tell my kids...). Give them the illusion of a choice: Don't ask "What would you like to do today?", give them a short list of options - "Would you like to go to the playground or the library?"; Or if you're sneaky, give them a hobson's choice - "Would you like to go to the library or the dentist?".
    It works a treat.
    Its working now.
At the worst, all the kids do is chip in with one more option - ("Why can't we use Carlaw Park?") Then you can use the parental veto - "make up your minds or we'll go to Christchurch instead".
Otherwise they end up faffing around for ages ("what about the tank farm, down by the Bombays, Whenuapai airbase, the Mt Wellington quarry, Botany downs, Mt Smart Stadium, etc), fighting amongst themselves, and wind up with nothing much happening at all - "stuff it, we'll stay home and play Lego Star Wars instead".

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

One thing no-one seems to have speculated upon yet - Imagine the fun and games that would be going on right now if John Banks was still Mayor of Auckland... Fire, Aim, Ready perhaps?

  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

Luckily for me, if I feel the urge to buy a Mac, I have a pet Mac geek with a business account - who'd probably still import it. But being as I'm employed in an entirely PC environment, its just easier to have a PC at home. I guess I'm just lazy - The kids use Macs at school and have no probs transitioning to the PC at home.

The Herald has been running like a dog for me for the past few weeks, I just figured our corporate firewall was playing up. Maybe someone should mention something to some at the Herald? I know some of them are reading this...

  • What do you want them to play at your funeral?,

Of course as someone, probably Woody Allen, said, I don't want to acheive immortality through my works, I want to acheive immortality by not dying.

    But failing that...

Straitjacket Fits - Down in Splendour
    - cause she speeds doesn't work so well for a bloke
Joe Satriani - Always With Me Always With You
    - as a nod to my bogan past
Flaming Lips - Do You Realise
    - but only if its soon, as a nod to my trying-to-be-more-up-to-date present
    Concrete Blonde - Lullaby
    - cause its pretty & sad
    Pearl Jam - Jeremy
    - no reason apart from the obvious
Nick Cave - Into My Arms
    - as close as I'll get to something religious
