  • Hard News: Funky Seaside Village Revisited,

    Oh! And...

Chris Knox, the old square peg, won with the beautiful “My Only Friend” whose gorgeous video may one day be screened on TV.

Why isn't this available on the intertubes?!

  • Hard News: Funky Seaside Village Revisited,

That's great. Out of interest, who was the 27 year old still working for his father?

He's actually named in the paragraph right above that one - Rich Poole. He put a full-page ad in the Herald in 2000 moaning about how all his friends had gone overseas because NZ was so shit.

I remember the "Funky Seaside Village" article when it was first published, and it's one I've often thought about over the years. I remember how wonderful it was to read something about Auckland that was so optimistic. I think that's one of the secrets about enjoying Auckland - if you treat it like a metropolis, it will disappoint, but if you treat it like a series of villages (linked by motorways!), you can find a lot to like.

Meanwhile, I'm rather happy living in another funky seaside village down the other end of the island.

  • Hard News: Not Helping,

It probably says a lot that many New Zealanders think the cheese they buy at the supermarket is "just cheese" and don't realise it's cheddar.

  • Hard News: Top of the Populism,

Funniest thing about the Key interview in the Wall Street Journal:

"Bank of America," he says, with not a little mirth, "it's probably soon to be owned by Barack Ob-ah-ma!" -- emphasis on the "ah" in Kiwi-speak. His press secretary rolls her eyes.

I like to imagine John Key alone in his office after reading the article and quietly saying to himself, "Ob-ah-ma, Oh-bah-mah, Ob-ah-ma, Oh-bah-mah..."

  • Hard News: Self-satisfactorily Yours,

    Whatever happened to Belinda Todd?

Last seen working in PR. Lots of people seem to want to know - her name keeps turning up in the referer logs for my website.

And was Melody Rules really that bad? I confess I didn't see any of it.

It wasn't as bad as we remember it to be. The main problem, I reckon, was that the style of comedy it used wasn't one that had any history in New Zealand. It was based on the American sitcom, with its roots in vaudeville, so of course it wasn't going to work in New Zealand.

Factoid: one of the friends of Melody's younger brother was played by a young actor who went on to be the internationally awesome graffiti artist Askew.

Also, the two years that Belinda Todd and Joanna Paul co-hosted Nightline were golden.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

It is not true, either, that the casino won't let you empty your bladder, in case the spell breaks.

The last time I was there (for anthropological purposes, natch), I noticed that there were tags that you could attach to your pokie machine while you went away for a quick wee to show that it was still in use. And it made me wonder what sort of problems were caused before that - were people peeing on their stools or were their dust-ups when someone return from the loo only to find someone sitting at their lucky machine.

  • Island Life: There is no depression in…,

it was that building on the intersection of Crummer Rd and Ponsonby. The ASB trust building is on the other corner. It'll bug me now till I know.

Ah, it would be this one, which one of my Flickr pals thinks was called the Pink Palace.
