So the combination of film and filter does the weird things. If I remember correctly the classic is a red filter to darken the skies.??
Check out the photographic suppliers now for various coloured filters, all heavily discounted! This one was yellow, which is meant to increase contrast between clouds and blue sky, except there was not much blue sky to be seen.

Leica are making a purely monochrome digital camera where the sensor and processing is geared to capturing black and white images with a range of tones more like a really lovely black and white film.
Leica M Monochrom! Mmmmmmm. With one of these?

Anyone interested in the end of the analog photographic age (it’s been happening for a few years already) should check out this excellent book by Robert Burley The Disappearance of Darkness and some of the fine images on his blog. Burley has been photographing the formerly bustling Kodak, Agfa, Polaroid and Ilford plants and factories (now decaying, derelict or demolished) for almost ten years now. There’s more about his documentary project in this short film on Vimeo.
