  • Hard News: "Rubbish" is putting it politely,

For me 'Red River Shore' is the standout. A bit early in the listening cycle to say, but this could be a 'great' Bob Dylan song. Hard to believe but like 'Blind Willie McTell' this one has been quietly maturing in the vaults and has now been released for general consumption at it's peak. I've been listening to this guy for 40 years and he still has the power to amaze.

"Some of us turn off the lights and we live
    In the moonlight shooting by
Some of us scare ourselves to death in the dark
To be where the angels fly."

she can't name a single magazine or newspaper she has read:

That's because she has read 'all of them'.

    (see page 6 this thread.)

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

Like shooting fish in a barrel...

Couric: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?

Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.

    Couric: What, specifically?

Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.

Couric: Can you name a few?

Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, "Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?" Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

On a happier note, you might want to pop over to Bob Dylan's website for your free download of 'Dreamin' of You', from his forthcoming album Tell Tale Signs, No.8 in the Bootleg Series of rare and unreleased material.

The full two disc set is now streaming on NPR music for a week before it’s release 7 October.

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

Independent Andrew Halcro who debated with Palin many times during the 2006 gubernatorial campaign explains Palin’s methods and why she’s so successful.

Palin's debate style is simple: She's a master, not of facts, figures or insightful policy recommendations, but at the fine art of the non-answer, the glittering generality. Against such charms there is little Sen. Biden or anyone can do.

…… On April 18, 2006, Palin and I sat together in a hotel coffee shop comparing campaign trail notes. As we talked about the debates, Palin made a comment that highlights the phenomenon that Biden is up against.
"Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers and yet when asked questions you spout off facts, figures and policies and I'm amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, 'Does any of this really matter?' " Palin said.

While public policy wonks might cringe, the fact was that Sarah Palin was simply vocalizing her biggest campaign strength without realizing it. During the campaign, from January to November, Palin's message on important public policy issues never evolved -- because it didn't have to. Her ability to fill the debate halls with her presence and her gift of the glittering generality made it possible for her to rely on populism instead of policy.

Masochists can watch a full 90 minutes of one of these debates at C-Span.

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

He was self-aware. McCain, whether by design or temperament, made virtually no eye contact with Obama in 90 minutes.

There’s some very interesting insights in the comments sections of both the Huffpo article by Michael Shaw and on his Bagnews site.

    From Huffpo.

Michael, youre perceptions are quite accurate. I'm a dance therapist and what I can tell you is that the body never lies. You (I) can tell you a person's entire life story from watching their body movements. McCain is not affectionate with his wife or children. He is only affectionate with his male buddies. His contempt for Obama was despicable. He should have showed some graciousness. This should serve as an example of McCain's inability to work with world leaders and his lack of diplomatic skills.

McCain does not have a warm relationship with his wife or family. He and Cindy lead separate lives. In other words he lacks emotional intelligence. Obama's emotional intelligence is very high. He loves and respects his wife and children; their is a lot of physical affection amongst them which is a sign of emotional health. I want a president who has a healthy relationship with his wife.

And from the Bag. One view.

"I think people really are missing the point about McCain's failure to look at Obama. McCain was afraid of Obama. It was really clear--look at how much McCain blinked in the first half hour. I study monkey behavior--low ranking monkeys don't look at high ranking monkeys. In a physical, instinctive sense, Obama owned McCain tonight and I think the instant polling reflects that."

    And another.

I don't think this is accurate at all. Sorry. I enjoy watching primates myself, certainly I'm no expert, but primates can exhibit this behavior for other reasons as well. An older, dominant but fading silverback can ignore a powerful rival in his troop and not make eye contact at all, because he knows what the future brings. Another reason for lack of eye contact, stiff body language and physical ticks in primates, as in people, can be the result of abuse or emotional/mental instability. The latter is probably the case with McCain. Because fear is not the explanation for McCain's behavior.

There’s a delightful stripped down version of Mississippi from the album available free as well.

Also recommended is the just released children’s illustrated book of the lyrics of Forever Young.

Paul Rogers who did an earlier book of jazz greats, takes us into the Greenwich Village of the sixties with lots of visual clues to Dylan’s music- some explained at the end and some left for the trainspotters. The book has a theme of the torch being passed through the generations via the symbolic handing over of guitars from Woody Guthrie to Dylan and from him to the children and the future. Great present for a young’un in your life.

Dylan is doing his bit for literacy too with some of the proceeds from the seven concerts in his October tour of Canada going to the Raise a Reader programme.
