The problem is, anti-drug populism is an orthodoxy that has been allowed to fuel the ‘war on drugs’. Its staple frame of reference is selective news coverage that focuses on specific events without reference to depth or context, whipping up moral panic and allowing antidrug moralists to dominate the political conversation without any access to evidence-based perspectives from responsible specialists. Consequently, national drug policy is a quagmire.

That said, a pro-demagogue Auckland rally only attracted 100 or so sycophants, compared to several hundred supporters of multiculturalism and diversity in that city.

Mr Ikilei is the Deputy Leader of the tiny "New Conservative" microparty, which only received 0.2% (6253 votes) at the September 2017 New Zealand election. That makes it the eighth largest New Zealand political party: http://www.electionresults.govt.nz/electionresults_2017/

I would only ever support this if an overwhelming majority of Maori stated that they wanted their abolition. That sort of groundswell is not discernible, so therefore the Maori seats must stay in place, and perhaps even be increased in proportion should there be specific Maori Roll enrolments that would warrant that.

Ontario has just elected a provincial conservative government. I suspect that there may be setbacks there, although the current Premier Doug Ford's late brother Rob Ford was an infamous polydrug user while he was Toronto Mayor, especially crack cocaine.

Excellent submission, but surely problem littering should be included within the Summary Offences Act, along with other public nuisance low-level offences? Why does it warrant a stand-alone statute in the first place?

I tend to regard myself as vanilla with strawberry elements. That said, it is one of the hallmarks of LGBT BDSM community life that it is safe, sane and consensual. For the LGBT leather community, the horrific Colin Ireland anti-leather serial killer case was directly motivated by the anti-leather Operation Spanner. BDSM is a consensual adult activity, Based on New Zealand's own R v Chignall (teenage dominatrix) case in the nineties, one would have assumed that the New Zealand judiciary would think twice before negotiating this sexual politics arena again. I stand with my LGBT BDSM sisters and brothers (and genderfluid individuals). How organised are straight leather communities? The impression I got from Patrick Califia is that the BDSM communities are fragmented, or at least they were in the nineties...?

Am I the only one who wishes Nicky would write another piece of incisive investigative journalism? For example, I'd be fascinated to read his perspective on the Middlemore hospital situation. And yes, Nicky, that is a hint!
