  • Hard News: Game Lorde, in reply to Danielle,

    I have decided that music critics obsessed with “realness” and “authenticity” are going to be first against the fucking wall when the revolution comes.

    "Does he really want to hold her hand? Who is she anyway? I don't think she exists."

    Those questions on the US immigration application? Draft as a coot! I always wonder if anyone ever answers ‘yes’ to any of them

    My mother-in-law was detained by US immigration last year when she absent-mindedly ticked "Yes" on all of them instead of "No". I would say "hilarity ensued", but hilarity is verboten when dealing with US immigration.

  • Hard News: Jonesing, in reply to Myles Thomas,

    Could it be that Jones is the more right-wing of the three hence he is the preference for the National Party and for Guyon and Duncan (Guncan anybody?)

    My working theory is that he's the candidate who is most like a corporate neolib swinging dick, which means that for National (and certain other middle-age white men):
    a) he's the only one whose motivations they understand, and
    b) he's obviously the public's first choice, I mean, what more could anyone want?

    Who pays for porn?

    To be fair, in a hotel room in 2010 the internet might not have been the cheapest option.

    @CunliffeLeader is a troll

    And the account is dead now, which suggests to me at least that if it was a troll, it was a genuine one. A satirical troll wouldn't pack up shop like that.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Reinventing Beatles,

    I’ve always liked a good cover version.

    I'm going to re-tell an anecdote which I have used over the years as an excuse for my sparse (but deep! Honestly!) appreciation of pop music:

    When I was a child I seldom heard pop music in the house. One day when I was 9 or 10 I heard the sound of an orchestra, playing a tune I kind of recognised, coming from the stereo; I asked Dad what it was.
    "Oh, that's this record - "Ron Goodwin And His Orchestra Play The Beatles". You know, when you listen carefully, The Beatles had some good tunes - it's just a pity they couldn't play or sing properly."

    Le Creuset, c. 40 years old - almost the only thing I inherited from my Dad that doesn't have wheels. Story is that it was a wedding present for his attempted first wedding, which fell through at the last minute. But he got to keep the cookware, so.
