  • Hard News: The Golden Mile,

I think quality rather than size is the only justifiable complaint that Brewer may have. Nothing at all wrong with small shops as amply demonstrated by O'Connell St, Vulcan Lane and (now sadly emptying) High St. This incidentally seems to be what Newmarket is trying to emulate in their little backstreet precincts, quite well in fact. The issue is crappy shops right?

Plus, I'm not even sure I even mind crappy shops on Queen St. It's got plenty more life and variety than when I last lived here (2000). The nooks and crannies and back streets of a city are generally the bits where cool things happen anyway, why should we expect that of the main drag? (and, a little bit of crappy can be actually quite cool: see K Road, Fort Lane).

And I didn't know about the redevelopment of the Mid City complex - could be great, could be shit, but better than a big empty building surely.

  • Hard News: One man’s Meat Puppets is…, in reply to Russell Brown,

you've just reminded me of part two of the AWESOME "Whatever Happened to Alternative Nation?" series by the AV Club's Steven Hyden: Axl vs Kurt.
I really recommend the whole series especially to those who grew up in the 90's Here is a link to all of it.

I too was tortured as a young person by my Dad's intolerable musical taste. In his case, avant-garde, up its own arse jazz. Loud, on Sunday morning.

    The Horror.

  • Hard News: One man’s Meat Puppets is…, in reply to Dovil,

God totally I HATE novelty songs.
Novelty covers particularly get my goat. The latest awfulness that seems to be everywhere is a reggae cover of all of Nirvana's Nevermind. The awful unecessariness of this makes me run screaming out of shops and restaurants.

  • Hard News: Dirty deeds done by Digger?,

From the link on the end of the lawsuit, without comment:

"This brings an end to this long drawn-out process in which we vehemently denied all allegations of piracy which were made against us over a decade ago," said Abe Peled, NDS Group executive chairman. "Piracy is an issue throughout the industry and injurious to all in the value chain. It is only with the active anti-piracy efforts of companies such as ourselves that the pay-TV industry is able to evolve and continue to enable people to enjoy premium TV viewing."

  • Hard News: Back to mediocrity,

The food at Eden Park is TERRIBLE except for the Weiner kiosk in the north stand - not sure it is there all the time?

Also - the Warriors at Eden park the other week was choice and all seemed to run very smoothly entrance-wise.

  • Hard News: Time to move on, in reply to Islander,

Some criminal law expert will no doubt be along shortly to correct me but my understanding is that Islander is right. Each party has a certain number of challenges for no cause (i.e. you need offer no reason). As a general rule jurors get asked no questions by Judge or lawyers although they are told (usually after empanelling) that they should not participate if they know someone involved etc. So you would hardly ever have a basis to challenge for cause.

  • Hard News: The Vision Thing,

So how about this for the vision thing: Key announces huge new super-ministry?

Perople used to be incredulous at the size and variety of tasks of the MED. Imagine this beast!
