the writers were way underqualified to write about all the baby stuff that happened.

As B Jones said, the flash sideways didn't exist in time, so Hurley and Ben had a brief exchange about how good they were at being in charge of the island post-real time narrative in the show. Some had already died, some were to die, but because 'what happened in Lost' was the most important time in their lives they all met up there before going off to heaven.
The sixth season was so bad that I was only watching because I'd already watched so much of it, and I thought I wasn't bothered by all the unresolved questions. But the ending was so, so bad that I realised that I was. Perhaps if, when Jack was dying, a polar bear suddenly leapt out of the jungle and finished him off, I could have been okay with it all.
ETA: in fact it was so bad that later that night I threw up. Some would say that this was because of a stomach virus that was circulating through Pittsburgh, but I know it was because of Christian Shephard.

If you turn the iPad over, it doubles as a chopping board. True story.
if you're making pizza, you can use it as a peel.

American Idol. Which has been absolute cack this season. And can only get worse with Cowell disappearing.
But the Paula Abdul trainwreck that just happened live on television will make Cowell's departure famous forever.

Janelle Monáe's performance on Letterman the other night is good for what ails ya.

George, I got through the first 150 pages or so of 2666 last year before end-of-semester obligations and an unwillingness to take such a big book on a flight from the US to NZ meant I had to put it down. I enjoyed what I read of it, I think. The part I read was very Borgesian in its literary mind games, but I didn't get far enough in to say much more than that. It's very much in the tradition of Latin American literature, though. I'm planning to go back to it later this summer though, as soon as I'm done with Adrian Johns' Piracy.

Has anyone done the maths on what this election would have looked like under mmp, assuming voting patterns were unchanged and no one split their vote? How low would the threshold need to be to avoid overhang from all of those minor parties?

On BBC Andrew Neil has just described the UK electoral system as 'the most sophisticated in the world'!!!
The Beeb certainly has some neat graphics. Swingometer!

What is the precedent- does the Queen ask the party with the most seats to try to form a govt first- or is it open slather horse-trading and deal-making as soon as votes are counted and no party has a majority?
I skimmed the thread so don't know if this has been answered yet, but the speaker's rules(forget the technical name)/convention says that the prime minister from the previous government is to be given the opportunity to make a queen's speech (i.e. form a government) first in the event of a hung parliament. And if that fails then anyone else can try. But it's not a binding thing, and Clegg apparently isn't too bothered about it, so horse-trading it will be.

Thanks Sacha.
