  • Hard News: Villainy and engagement,

I’m cynical enough to wonder if even this firing was pre-scripted?

If the replacement judges are more famous, then I’d assume so.

If however, they are one-star judges, rather than the just fired two-star judges, (as Russell correctly noted in his post :D ), maybe it really did catch MediaWorks on the hop?

  • Hard News: Works in progress, in reply to Tom Semmens,

I guess that the obvious solution is to buy an electric bike.

They certainly seem to go very well… they zip past me all the time and a co-worker loved his…

But they are still not cheap… You can get a new bike for $100 at the warehouse or k-mart (but I dont recommend it)… you can get a reasonable new bike from a proper bike shop for ~$400 to $1000, and if you go second hand $100 will get you a far better bike than the new one that was at the warehouse, and $200-400 will get you a 1 to 3 year old one that retailed for $1000, or a 10-15 year old one that was good enough for the keen amateur ( or even pro) racers…

The electric assist bikes seem to cost $1500-$3000 ???

  • Legal Beagle: A rather incomplete…, in reply to BenWilson,

Yes, that was what I was referring to. It’s as close as we’ve ever got.

Somewhat off-topic, but the 1984 Wellington Trades-Hall bombing might also have been terrorist-ic in nature? (presumably a lone attacker rather than group?)

John Armstrong: National’s response not good enough

I was surprised to see this from him…

Edit- I see I was beaten to it... same as above.

  • Speaker: David Fisher: The OIA arms race, in reply to Kumara Republic,

On that note, I’d say a Kiwibank of electricity might be less cumbersome to set up than the “Pharmac of electricity” that is the NZPower proposal.

You mean a government owned power company to compete with the private ones? Like all the ones we just sold off? That weren’t all that good at competing with each-other in the first place?

It's not that it cant work.... but the owners (Govt) have to want it to work...

  • Speaker: David Fisher: The OIA arms race, in reply to Jack Harrison,

ASB has not always been a privately held business, it used to be one of the regional "Trust Banks".

    http://www.asbcommunitytrust.org.nz/about-us

ASB Community Trust distributes grants to the not-for-profit sector throughout Auckland and Northland each year.

Founded on the sale of its shares in the ASB bank, the Trust has distributed more than $800 million since being formed in 1988.

  • Southerly: This Week in Parliament: 20…,

Even our own Granny Herald came up with "Letters lost in male".... an article about a drug mule that turned themselves in to police a few days after arriving in the country, as the swallowed condoms full of drugs hadn't come out the expected passage.... (circa 1981/2 or so?).

  • Southerly: This Week in Parliament: 20…, in reply to Paul Campbell,

I was going to propose an ex-national MP/ex-All Black who seems to be at a loose end for the killer robot job but then realised that the fix was in and Bridges obviously already has a candidate in mind

I’m thinking of a particular ex-Nat and coincidentally also ex-Act MP/Party Leader who’d make an excellent second-choice candidate after Robo-collins?

  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest,

    a land of consonant sorrow?

    Dear Mr Dalziel...
I just want to say that you and your constant puns are one of the absolute best reasons for hanging around here at Public Address...

Many people around here are funny, (I try my own hand at times), but you Sir, are a constant source of mirth, while remaining pithily on topic, and drawing from a wide source of references for you riffs...

    Applause, Applause, Applause....

    P.S. I love you.
