  • Feed: Saints Preserve, in reply to BenWilson,

I tend to pile lawn clippings under citrus, too. They don’t like root competition, and it’s a regular addition of nutrients that you’ve got to put somewhere anyway. Maybe 5cm deep spread right out to the drip line, which is the rough extent of the roots.

Me too Ben, lawn clippings are a fantastic mulch, put on fresh they seem to burn off the weeds - except kikuyu of course.

The only decent crop it has had was in 2011 when the sewerage failures meant three males were peeing around it for months.

That's how I restored a failing lemon tree , lemon trees it seems just loved to be pissed on. Same for orchids.

  • Hard News: Poll Day 2: Queasy, in reply to The Ruminator,

We all just think the media is anti-whicheverside-we’re-on

But News reporters are meant to be balanced, well according to Brian Edwards. Deeper in his blog he says

But we have laws in this country about reporting in news and current affairs programmes. In those programmes journalists are required to be balanced in their reporting and analysis. The rules for TVNZ and TV3 are quite different from the rules for Fox News for example. Comment must also be clearly distinguished from straight news.

Is that true that we have laws requiring news journalists to be balanced?

  • Hard News: Poll Day 2: Queasy, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I find it difficult to understand how a newsroom that contains John Campbell (who has become a very good journalist) and the team that supports him, can also contain Mr Gower. It strikes me as odd.

    Me too

  • Hard News: Polls: news you can own, in reply to Kumara Republic,

It’s part of a burning question: are polls intended to reflect public opinion, or influence it?

    Bloody good question Deep Red.
It seems to me that in this election more than any other the media is playing a much bigger role in "shaping" perceptions. The recent nazisification of Kim.Com was a classic case of media as propaganda attack dogs.
It concerns me how much Poll result influence the marginally motivated voters or those on the fence, people like to back winners.

  • Hard News: Things worth knowing, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Three of the five immigration/inappropriate ministerial behaviour scandals I can think of in the last few years involve China. The wider issue to me is our general complacency when it comes to the possibility that the corruption and cronyism that is routine in China isn’t already starting to rub off on our politicians and business class

    Very good point Tom.
Made me think of who else we are exporting to , this global corruption index has China at 62 nd place out of 148 countries. Interestingly , Philippines , Thailand, Argentina, Russia are far worse.
