  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

It really was a very good newspaper only a few short years ago.

I actually used to proudly show it overseas to contrast with the festering pile of poo that was the British situation.

    But not any more.

  • Hard News: Start with your conclusion,

Frankly I just find it all a bit depressing... because dream of a Representative Democracy, where we elect someone to consider the evidence then take decisions on our behalf.

But with this type of behaviour, they have to consider the opinion of the great unwashed who aren't simply ignorant, but have been actively misinformed.

  • Hard News: Do Want?,

I had one of the first (T1000) Compaq Tablet's. It's main problem was that it ran Windows and my CDMA card stuck out the side. Apart from that I loved it ... when it worked. Hated the pen.

So I think Apple are on the money with this. I basically want an iPod Touch with a bigger screen, and this is it. Chuck 3G in the back (on my private call-plan) and I'm very happy, as long as it flips to Wifi at home...

The main reason corporates struggle with the iPhone is the differentiation of the personal from corporate data (because they've bought into the nonsense that your employer is responsible for everything that pops up on your work phone...blithering risk-averse lawyers mutter mutter)

  • Up Front: All Together Now,

The CPS policy on prosecuting rape is interesting reading.

Being involved in the criminal prosecution process (fortunately rarely in matters as unpleasant as this) I never cease to be amazed at the odd choices made by prosecutors, often due to external pressures.

e.g. this one may have had a dozen cases on the go - and chose to effectively drop this one to focus on the others. The public service is all about rationing...

  • Hard News: Space for Ol Dat I See,

MA... songs of my youth... mighty thoughtless of them to turn up when I am tied up with an operational matter.

So can you please not post a review unless they were bloody awful...

On the topic... my thanks to John Davy Tyres in Thames. Shock absorber separates from car noon on Saturday. We limp in. Guy has a look and stays open while I (luckily) procure a pair from Repco down the road. It's now 12.30 and I've watched a steady stream of his mates pop in and ask him when he'll be joining them for a cold one on this scorcher of a day.

He fits the shocks. At 1.15 I say thanks and how much?

  • OnPoint: Google to Embargo China,

150,000,000 internet users may not care Keith.

... but I think 15,000,000 exporters will start to get irritated when a prospective customer Googles "Chinese mobile phone supplier" and gets no hits...

And yes, I know this can be fiddled, but what a pain...

  • Speaker: There's a word for that ...,

You missed out that the baby boomers had free university education ...

    Bastards.

<g> I had to work really hard to cut my stream of vitriol down in terms of content and anger... I still feel bad I ranted on for so long...!

So I cut out / down on education, the public transport network, manipulation of the way health dollars are spent, the distortions in alcohol duty (sherry!), smacking... the list got so long. All the various rambling justifications in various religious world-views are a series in their own right!

  • Hard News: A bigger breach?,

Basically, internal systems at Auckland City have been compromised.

Why else would the Banks go public? PCI DSS has been laggardly in NZ. It's a commercial arrangement, so you can't force the issue... unless you get a nice healthy breach. In which case you name and shame the weak link...
