Hard News: All John's Friends, in reply to
I could almost see you preferring Labour/Green over National/Winston/whoever-else-cobbles-together-a-majority
It wouldn't require much squinting. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, if Winston Peters stood to become the MP for Hell I would at least make a complimentary reference to Satan here. Anyone who would put that man's feet back under the Cabinet table, where he can do real and lasting damage, is unfit to govern.

Yep, batshit-crazy all right, but so long as it keeps Labour from forming a government it will all be worth it.
And I doubt my dear friend Tom is the only Labour type who’d flip that and make me equally want to take a long holiday in the Slough of Despond. Have Labour and National learned nothing from their previous marriages of convenience with that toxic bigot and his merry band of blithering ninny-hammers? Apparently not…

Hard News: Cranks, self-seekers and the mayor, in reply to
Except that a subsequent article revealed that he had, indeed, declared the trip; he just said he hadn’t because he got cornered and couldn’t be sure of his own recollection.
Aw, diddums. I'd be a little more sympathetic if, as Russell pointed out, he'd not only made the rod for his own back and downright begged for a good thrashing. Brewer failed Politics 101: Before you start posturing on the moral high ground, make sure you're not only fully dressed but your linen is impeccably clean and fragrant.

Unless one works for el Granny as senior editorial staff, in which case the entitlement runs deep.
Well, can't argue with that. Sadly, I suspect the separation of news-and-opinion will only be re-asserted when Granny's BDS (Brown Derangement Syndrome) results in APN cutting someone a fat cheque, and costs, to settle a defamation suit.

Guys. Calm down, keep it simple.
Bloody oath. I still think it's also time for Orsman to either be given a column where he can editorialize at will or go on gardening leave until his contract as a reporter runs out. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but nobody is entitled to present it as news reportage.

I’ve now confirmed independently that the security guards were hired by Auckland Transport purely for crowd control on the day. And that the Herald was very clearly told this.
And which happens with monotonous regularity for special events (like the BDO, Christmas in The Park etc.) or when there are service disruptions (i.e. assisting passengers during scheduled line closures when trains are replaced with buses). Still, I'm sure my 68 year-old partner who has been drafted into pulling on the high-vis vest occasionally will be delighted to learn he's a "heavy".

Hard News: Crashing the party before it starts, in reply to
Whatever it is, it’s not going to affect this election.
OK, so Kim Dotcom is just Bob Jones for hipsters? Good to know.

So, not to put to fine a point on it Colin Craig made a string of untrue statements (whether out of malice or sheer ignorance, I don't really know) and the media just transcribed the press release. Yet again, Russell does more basic fact checking in his home office than the alleged news outlets put together.
I don't know about anyone else, but this shit is getting tedious.

Laneway lost Lorde and James Blake to the Grammys. (And it could have been worse – it turned out that quite a few of the Laneway acts were in peril of Grammy noms this year. The promoters were sweating.) But they’re moving ahead with their respective giant parties.
And for fuck's sake, Lorde is doing a (free) make-up show and I understand James Blake would have been happy to do the same if his tour schedule had allowed. Give the promoters some credit where it's due, because there's plenty of form for similar situation ending up in places where the only winners are the lawyers.

I suspect any other supposedly huge changes would also be quietly absorbed and adapted to.
Weirdly enough, industries do that. I know Made In Dagenham isn't a documentary, but folks were seriously arguing that equal pay for women would send the global economy screaming into the void. As it turned out, there were larger problems.
