I would love to see those who don’t agree with Graeme’s post provide some on-point rebuttal

    Here :)

  • Southerly: My Life As a Palm Tree, in reply to Steve Barnes,

How the hell are we supposed to feed all these extra people who are going to be around because they didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, didn’t fall off a high building, didn’t drive drunk, didn’t take drugs, didn’t cut their heads off with a chainsaw because they didn’t see themselves?.

They will die early from obesity and sedentary life-style complications?
Bull-rush and sand-dune leaping will be compulsory in the future, as the 'dangers' of not being active make the headlines.

  • Southerly: My Life As a Palm Tree,

It's interesting how 'small-town/country bits of even big cities were a few decades back. Growing up in such settings is a grand way to have narrow escapes. We underestimate the value of 'wild' spaces- even the scrappy eucalypts and tangle of vines next-door to my first primary school (we called it 'the jungle') was an education.
It didn't rate at the time, but aged 10, one of my mates' dad was foreman of the local council gang. We discovered a few boxes of sticks of gelignite in their garage, and over quite a long period, we'd fish out a few sticks and play with them (put them under things and pretend to blow them up.) We heard that if the geli 'sweated' it was nitroglycerine, and we watched hopefully for this when they were in the sun, but did not, I'm pleased to say now, ever try to warm them by the fire :)

  • Hard News: Friday Music: I'm Over The Edge,

It might also be said that Bailter Space doesn’t quite feel like Bailter Space without his thunderous presence.

Shy, gentle, and mighty: I reckon John put the guts into the Gordons, as well as Bailter Space. Didn’t know he did a stint with the Skeptics- must check that out.
Remarkable guitarist, as well as playing bass. My memory of the Gordons is mostly two guitars and drums, no bass, and it sounded like sixteen walls of sound colliding at high speed :) </HalvorsenFanclubRaver>

  • Hard News: U: It's about the combos,

Ad sales in TVland are slowly declining. I think that's the bottom-line: free-to-air ad-supported TV is in contraction rather than expansion mode, despite some costs coming down in the digital age. (Others have gone up)
Public broadcasting is the best option. Most countries do it. Subscription may have a little more life left, but I reckon its model will have to change away from Sky's current "fairly big lump sum every month for a little you content you do, and a lot of content you don't want."

  • Hard News: The Real Threat, in reply to Stephen R,

    Definitely fishy!
As is 'there is no evidence Jon Stephenson was spied on". Which is quite compatible with: he was spied on, we know it, but we've destroyed all the evidence...

  • Capture: Two Tales of a City, in reply to Hebe,

Artist Rudolf Boelee opens his latest exhibition in Christchurch tomorrow evening, the first stop in a New Zealand tour.

Thanks Hebe- lovely, the words and pictures. And the sense of connection- it feels like a web of art and art-filled lives holding the city together.

  • Capture: Two Tales of a City,

Warning: long articles for Chch politic geeks :)
Puddleglum with part 1 and two of a three-part series on the rebuild, issues around, and how things are playing out... Mostly written before the Parker announcement, but interesting ideas on how- and for whom- the 'new city' will be created.
Part 3 on 'the frame' to come.
