in the US each and every pole is owned by someone and others pay to use it - some are owned by cities, some by utilities, some by random strangers
Who owns them in NZ? the city, anyone know? a lines company? in my neighbourhood (Belleknowes in Dunedin) fibre is passing us by (being installed into all the neighbourhoods around us leaving us as an unconnected island) - we have a lot of home 'net workers here and we're a little pissed off - we've started talking about seeing if we can arrange someone else to install fibre rather than Chorus - they wont really even answer the phone - all they have is an 800 number who's job is to spout platitudes, you can't reach anyone who actually makes decisions
We've started talking about approaching a 3rd party and seeing if they'll wire our neighbourhood since Chorus doesn't seem to care (I don't want to wait until '2019') - I wonder if the new Vodaphone/Telstra conglomerate is hungry enough?

Well no - a bit of evolution-in-action would kick in and what we would get would be a better quality of minor support partners .... if you never kick out the bad ones no one ever learns and a bit of institutional memory is a good thing - sadly after this no one will find themselves saying "remember what happened to Banksy, let's not make that mistake"

We had a great turning 50 party, didn't really tell anyone, called it a 'solstice party' and over did the prep a little more than usual and had a great time - my usual party music list solution is to simply place a chosen pile of CD's by the CD player and switch them in/out 5 at a time every couple of hours.
My partner is 6 months older, by the time I become any particular age 'we' have already worked through the angst ....
Friends rented a hall and a band who played 60s oldies - completely missing the audience by a decade ..... grumbling ensued

yeah - that's it for me too - I used to be an Apple fan boy - designed hardware and software for them - not any more - I don't want Steve Job's ghost looking over my shoulder telling me what I can't do. And don't insist on taking a cut on everything that I do - sell your hardware for enough that you make a profit and be done with it
If you're worried about security design it in from day one - don't depend on someone from the Apple (or the Google, or the Microsoft) app store to check every app and get it right - that just isn't going to work.

You should be as worried by the practices (announced and otherwise) of the apps you load as the device you load it in to - for example:

Getting hi-score on worms is good for the lulz - getting on your banking app, may be more dangerous

also people don't have to all get on at the front - people can get on and swipe through any door - makes loading and unloading even faster

surely the issue around bar staff serving the intoxicated could be well served by "I'd like a rum and coke" "certainly sir, blow here please" .... a little feedback on how drunk we are as the night progresses even if we're not totally shitfaced would be a great learning tool.
One of the things I've tried to get over to my kids is "look that guy is having no fun" - especially as a beginner you don't really understand that alcohol takes a while to kick in - and you can easily go from having a happy time to being that guy without realising it - and then forget why - I think it's hard to learn how to reliably have fun with alcohol - so a little feedback during the process might not go amiss

Danielle/Fooman: yeah I figured it wasn't easy - it wouldn't stop someone borrowing more than they need every year and using the extra to pay off some of the previous year's loan I guess
