Under the bridge, in the dawn light.

Guanwang Miao at dawn - first time I've seen the door open.

The news media have legal and social privileges extended to them because they are supposed to act in the public good,...

    There, fixed.

Is it true that in China at some time families of people who were executed were sent a bill for the bullet?

Apparently, yes. At least, that's what I heard. And I also seem to recall hearing only a few years ago that they were going to stop doing that. Still, it's a huge improvement over feudal times when the family of somebody executed could also be executed.

Sorry, I refuse to give Len Brown a free bus ticket

I'm not giving him a free anything. In fact, part of the problem seems to be people giving him free stuff, and I'd rather not contribute. But in your first comment you wrote:

It’s interesting to compare this to Canada’s equivalent Toronto imbroglio with its own scandal-ridden, embattled Mayor, Rob Ford

How does that comparison work? One has been accused of criminal activity, and his responses to those accusations have been somewhat less than constructive. The other has been found accepting a few too many freebies and not declaring them and apparently using the mayoral car and cellphone for extracurricular activities that perhaps he shouldn't have and not repaying the council. I fail to see how Brown is anywhere near in the same league as Ford, let alone how this comparison adds anything useful to the discussion.

Nor do I see how any of his policies are relevant to this issue.

    Palmer, Moore, Bolger and Shipley,

All but Shipley pre-MMP. Well, Bolger first became PM under FPP and then oversaw the introduction of MMP in '96, but then again he became PM in 1990. Serving 7 years doesn't seem especially less successful.

Apple orchards, Columbia river, Wa state

Since apples would be a suprising crop and Columbia a strange river name in northern Burma, I assume by "Wa state" you mean Washington?

  • Hard News: We need to talk about Len,

I don't get the comparisons to Rob Ford. Rob Ford has been accused of drunk driving and smoking crack, both of which are crimes. Has Len Brown been accused of anything illegal? Free rooms and upgrades at Sky City looks dodgy, but has there been even the hint of an allegation that they were dodgy to the point of breaking any law?

  • Speaker: Levelling the Playing Field, in reply to Sacha,

True, but for all the richness of my online life, I still need and feel more fulfilled by real world socialisation - well, as much as my introverted self can handle. Observation suggests others feel the same. So I don't see cinemas, concerts, pubs, festivals and other fleshy crowds going away any time soon. I suspect such things will last about as long as our species does.
