Legal Beagle: A matter of conscience, in reply to
(although with Māori electorates having self-selected voters, it becomes slightly more plausible).
I'm not sure what you are implying here: it is a fact that you choose whether or not to apply to go on the Maori roll. In my electorate, Te Tai Toka, there is some fairly assiduous checking that goes on, to be certain that voters are indeed of Maori descent. (There was an unusual period where quite a few wannabe Maori , some with genuine empathy, decided that joining Te Tai Tonga roll was the way to do it...a very large number of the tribe look fairly Pakeha...the wannabees have been weeded out over the past 30 years.))

(And I takiaue on behalf of the many many hundreds who died in the Land Wars ,either in fighting or from starvation or introduced illness. "Sarah Lark" is a no-nothing & a nithing insofar as Maori history is concerned, exploiting our land for her erroneous romances. May dire things happen to her.) -

Graeme, I understand your point, but I wonder if it’s necessary to drag gods into this debate. Plenty of atheists have very strong principles on certain issues.
This atheist says +1.
I have both a strong sense of morality, and equity, and my conscience will not allow me to sanction certain things. Gods do not come into the matter. -

<q>You seem to be saying that only Maori can hold a view or express an opinion.
What does it matter that my background is brown, black, white or yellow. An INFORMED opinion communicates with me, as a Maori. Anybody else can express an opinion as a ANZ tax-paying citizen-
I have no know idea what your background is, but your comments are pretty bog-standard Pakeha resentment- -

<q>ity looked like when it was Otautahi pa and surrounds; what trees and vegetation were there, what birds.
Lots of both!
There was a Kai Tahu hui about 8? 9? years ago that addressed the nature of the presence of ka manu iwi katoa- overwhelmingly loud was the consensus, dominant (so much so that ‘gathered human voices couldnt outsing the birds.’)One of the reasons Kai Tahu kai-karaka call so strongly/loudly (I can be heard from one end of Big O to the other, if I so choose) is – we were attempting to out-call the birds…
