  • Hard News: Dopamine psychosis and other…,

Whereas the reality looks more like an abattoir. But I'm not able to deny middle Auckland its night out at Sky City, however little it appeals to me. I just despise the low-rent versions that sprout like corner dairies where the poor people live.

I'd be guessing that you are more likely to visit the first, but not the second. That you can afford to splurge and have a good night whenever you feel like it. That you earn enough money, you are not poor.

If you were poor, a pensioner living on a fixed income you could not splurge on a whim. You might even spend a measly $20 a week playing pokies and having a quiet & boring chat with your mates, watching every cent. You might only win back $400 once a year, but on that night it is a good fun night for you and your mates. Now how about the government (backed by self important middle class do-gooders) make that illegal - you get $20 extra a week, to have an infinite number of boring nights with the boys for the rest of your life (living on a measly government pension). How incredibly depressing, you are going to be less than pleased. You might do something rash like partake in criminal gambling and then you are a criminal, criminally spending $20 a week in the hope of having a good night out with your mates.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

From the perspective of this Wellingtonian, Hubbard and Banks remind me of Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo...

    LOL.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

The Peace Movement by definition is pacifist.

And also by definition they want the state to be more pacifist in nature, making their success a common cause to every violent local or foriegn group who wants to disarm state security.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

    Margaret,

Rudman has a good point in the Herald about the Hobson Wards that came out against Banks and killed the eastern bypass not being present this time.

What you gain from undegrad tertiary is a certificate saying that you can do all the basics and stick it out doing something challenging that is rigorously tested. On this basis you can get a better job. Perhaps we should make the final year of school similarly rigorous and not award certificates for attendence.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

It looks a bit like a test case for STV. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that Banks wouldn't have won under a preferential voting system. But he did win, by standing still, under the system we've got...

    ...against Hubbard.

Hubbard lost this. Auckland was run by Bruce Hucker for 2 years and he was rolled in the third, then Auckland was apparently run by no one. Hubbard was insubstantial, a mere figurehead. If Labour/City Vision had disowned this failure of a mayor and backed another, Banks would not have won.

  • Hard News: Those Men Again,

    Don,

At the start of the smacking debate in August 06 there was parity and at the end National was 15% ahead. It is a matter of record, no guesstimates at variance and no need to suspect or doubt.

  • Hard News: Those Men Again,

It's a bit like the smacking debate. There was reasonable concern but all too often this with reasonable concerns aligned themselves with some real wild eyed loonies.

    Don,

Not a bit, it is exactly like the anti-smacking debate. Only this time National will not be offering a face saving compronise.

The repeal of s59 cost Labour its lead in the polls and currently has it 12% behind. Labour should not ignore those voicing reasonable concern about the EFB, unless it can afford the loss of another 5 - 10% support.
