  • Hard News: Kids these days,

It was Mary who was immaculately conceived, so that she could be born without Sin.

  • Hard News: Kids these days,

Maybe the Pew question skirts round the common ancestor because many people don't understand the concept.

  • Hard News: Kids these days,

Nothing wrong with social networking mind you, but just because it is done instantly via bandwidth, doesn't make it any more valid or useful than any other generations'. Unless it is used for generating real social change and political momentum to solve some of the mounting problems Nexters will need to address, it is just another cocktail party on steroids.

Myspace is a lot of fun. There is nothing wrong with that, nor with cocktail parties. Lighten up, as we X-ers used to say.

  • Hard News: Kids these days,

I hope you didn't give those Clean tickets to Nexters. I have reason enough to envy them without that.

  • Hard News: Sunday newspaper prints…,

These guys are not all in their jobs: two of them are convicted rapists serving time. The third has become a senior officer, despite his seedy past apparently being known throughout the police.

Does anyone remember the case of the female police officer who was moonlighting as a prostitute, who was told to make a career decision? Does anyone remember the female detective who was having a relationship with a pornographer and was told to make the same decision?

Are these recent cases evidence that the police culture has changed or that ethical issues only happen to women officers?

  • Hard News: Bad men,

The prior convictions were not relevant to the case which the jury heard. A jury should decide on the facts of the case, not the character of the defendent or his history. In this case, the jury heard all the evidence, deliberated for some time and returned a verdict. That is how our trial system works.

  • Hard News: Launching into raunch,

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this talk of porn being empowering just an excuse for looking at porn? Regardless of the management policies at Suicide Girls, they still are in the flesh business; it is flesh that viewers want. Suicide Girls happens to offer hip, cool flesh. It is still porn, but it is acceptable porn: indy porn.

Before Suicide Girls there was erotica. It still involved naked female flesh but it was artistic and that made it alright. You could tell it was artistic because the photographs were taken in corn fields and barns and the models never smiled: this was serious art, not mere porn.

I don't have any moral problem with this sort of thing but it is all a load of wank in more than one sense of the word.

Moaning? I am disappointed that I didn't feel it. The barbecue I was enjoying (note to Wellingtonians - we have barbecues on summer nights in Auckland) was obviously too interesting for me to notice.
