  • Hard News: The digital switch-off,

I wonder if anybody could clarify this for me: the imperative for TVNZ to return a profit applies channel-wide, not programme by programme, right? I mean who's to say we can't have a few good but marginally less profitable programmes in the schedule and make up for it with, I don't know, Jersey Shore? I'm looking at TVONE's schedule and there are at least nine slots in which you could fit Hindsight and Backbenchers and Media 7 quite seamlessly, and we'd be all the better for it. (I would also be surprised if they actually don't rate, but that's just me.)

Where else are they going to hear Maori

Other than in the afternoon on the Maori channel, you mean? Drinnan reported this today:

But in a new initiative TVNZ revealed it would start a 24-hour Kidzone channel on Sky TV in May providing a venue for social obligations outside 7.

The new channel will have 30 to 50 per cent local content.

it's ministers are made up of Shipley's incompetent hard line neo-liberal left-overs

I thought that this post by British blogger digitalben on the Cameron government applied quite seamlessly to ours, all the more after Simon Power's can't be arsed moment. "These are the last dregs of neoliberal politics, the crew left behind to go down with the ship."

  • Hard News: The digital switch-off, in reply to John Holley,

We have gone from 84 hours/week of quality free-to-air programming for under fives to just 14 hours.

If you want the 84 hours you now have to pay for Sky.

That's why we have Sky: so we can plonk our under fives in front of the telly for 84 hours a week. Nothing less would do.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Che Tibby,

they work out from the roles where the parents live, then drawn average incomes from Census meshblocks.

Well it can't be too precise because there is no way in hell that the school population of our school is decile four. Perhaps state housing in otherwise affluent streets complicates the calculation too much.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Che Tibby,

you can have two schools next to each other with different demographics.

But the decile is calculated on the average income of the area, not of the parent population, correct? So the decile should be a fairly accurate indicator of the socioeconomic status of its environs.

Well, that's just awful. Provisional commiserations to you and everyone else who works at TVNZ7.

(Provisional in that there's still time for it not to happen. An election, mobilisation, yadda-yadda.)

Yup, I will be out of two jobs in TV.

Wait: what? Is it a done deal? We need more information. Anything you are at liberty to give us.

Poor woman. She probably thought I was raving mad.

Can't think what gave her such an idea.
