  • Hard News: Do you like what we've done…,

Fab. Had to change the bookmark, but.

I guess I can live with that ;)

  • Hard News: Summer's record has come early,

That Ladi6 vid is truly lovely.

As an aside, I wonder if Angie Stone has any idea how vocally influential she's been in a little country in the South Pacific?

  • Hard News: Revival,

My internal 13-year old is now screaming 'does not compute!' at me.

Hell yes, we couldn't wait to be given our brief turn on the range at Linton. We were each shown how to jam two live rounds through the holes in the feet into the ground to stop it bouncing around (I always though a couple of sticks may have more safely done the trick but I guess the bullets were more dramatic) and given a few rounds to pop off at a very Asiatic looking target.

The Stens we didn't actually get to fire, just repeatedly strip and robotically reassemble to a stopwatch held by a yelling someone who used to be our Latin teacher but was now a Sgt. Major.

  • Hard News: Revival,

Amongst the useless things we were taught was how to assemble and fire a Bren gun.

We were taught Bren's, Stens and Lee Enright 303s in Palmerston North. Our cadet training extended a year beyond the abolition because our headmaster thought it good for our characters. At 16 I could strip and rebuild a machine gun in the allotted time, a skill I've happily forgotten.

The upside was managing to work my way into the desirable Air Training Corps, using the fact I came from an air force background, which meant gliders at Ohakea some weekends whilst the others were trekking around the bush.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

but don't quote me, I am now confused as any US election does to me.

Don't be, Sofie. Very little changes. As you come towards the centre of each they're increasingly indistinguishable these last few decades.

So we have a black president but not a single Afro-American in the senate now (there have only been 6 since 1870!)

  • Hard News: Revival,

    A bit o' Ronnie ('74)

wonderful song that I've not heard for yonks

    Tying it all together:

    and one more

The week would not be complete without this

I'm not sure if it's been noted at PAS, if so I missed it. One of the sweetest voices ever gone.

But with Mick Hucknall as the singer.

I weep for Ronnie Lane's spinning corpse.

[I know you like him Jackie but Rod in his prime with The Faces was quite something - Western Springs, 1974, after two hours as Rob snapped his mike stand and grandly proffered 'Thank you for your time and your money as he strutted off' is one of my most cherished rock'n'roll memories]

  • Hard News: Revival,

After going to the other side of the world in August for two weeks in Zagreb and as we drove from the airport I saw a poster for Leonard peforming there on Sunday 29th

He's playing in Phnom Penh in a few weeks. I may go across if only to see what sort of crowd he would pull there. The idea seems odd although I'm not sure it should be these days.

Dylan plays there in a few months too, and it's an established part of the DJ and hip-hop circuit.

  • Hard News: Revival,

    dully competent year after year.

I think Weller is at his most dull when he does his workman dad-rock stuff. And even though it was almost unlistenable in places I was fascinated to see what he was trying to do towards the end of The Style Council.

The worst part about many legacy acts is the bi-annual announcement of 'a new album' which, for many, just means another album that fits seamlessly into a dreary sequence. I kinda like that people like Weller, Costello, and, yes, even Paul McCartney don't do that. It must be so fucking boring to be most rawk acts after album 10.
