  • Hard News: An unacceptable failure of care, in reply to Russell Brown,

Well, yes, I was referring to the comments. Fairly widespread liability for libel predates the internet, newspaper sellers are, I think, jointly responsible for any libels in the papers they sell (at least in the UK, NZ might have removed this).

But also, I suspect (and hope) a libel case is unlikely, both because of the cost and because such a case would require X and Y to deny the allegations under oath, something they might not be well advised to do.

However the HDC Bill, if ever enacted as proposed makes legal action a simpler process and truth not an absolute defence. That would definitely chill discussion such as this.

I did buy some knock-offs there one time, and they are really flimsy

So they were more at the $1 end of the scale I guess.

  • Hard News: An unacceptable failure of care,

All I can say is that it's a good job the Harmful Digital Communications Bill hasn't gone through yet, or Russell might be finding himself sanctioned.

(Hales (father or son) could still sue for libel, but the expense and hazard of that makes it less likely).

Aren't bFM and Radioactive those places?

(I know bFM is technically "student radio" being liked to AUSA, right. But AFAIK Active doesn't have any university links any more).

Why not grow those rather than trying to invent another tier.

(Oh, and maybe a future left wing government could take the tip and just stop subsidising the National Party's various propaganda outlets).

It's a myth that pork creates jobs. Mostly, it just changes them and moves them around - making people work in the pork-barrelled industry or move to the favoured region.

Maybe, if there were a pool of unskilled, hard to employ people, some sort of hole digging and filling project would create jobs for them, but most kind of subsidies don't.

(Like tourism subsidies, which drive up room rates, maybe hotel income, probably inner-city land prices but don't do much for jobs or wages).

  • Hard News: Villainy and engagement, in reply to Mike O'Connell,

That "actor" concept is really out there.

Apparently in the olden days they used to have many such people who "played" characters in "plays" and "films". They could even do all sorts of bad shit "on stage" such as murdering the Roman Emperor, and they didn't even get in any personal or professional trouble for it.

    Wierd.

  • Hard News: Villainy and engagement,

Is part of the deal with these shows that not only are the competitors required to be walk-up rubes with no agent, but the judges are required to have no professional representation as well?

Because either this is the case, or those two had a crap agent, or they’ll be collecting a big wodge of money from TV3 for breach of non-disparagement clauses, or they always were expecting to get paid their full fee for doing half the programmes.

Be much better if we were able to OIA TV stations that spend public money and get full visibility of their machinations.

This is a sort of parallel music business to the real one (where people make music, play gigs, create records and don't really expect to give up the day job), right?

Instead, you have a kind of lottery where the winner gets to become a celebrated generator of prolefeed and to elevate other winners in a recursive cycle.
