  • Hard News: Where nature may win,

Thanks for posting that Woody Guthrie number, recordari. It's a song my father used to play on the car stereo.

Never quite got it until now.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Wee Fella,

They were brilliant - favourites for my money now.

And how has Klose managed to play such a marginal role for Bayern this season but turn it on come world cup time? Top stuff.

+1. I find the noise genuinely unpleasant, and what football I've watched, I've done with the volume way down.

The buzz also drowns out any ebb and flow of the sound of the crowd itself. It's vile.

I don't find the noise endearing, but it does have a certain warmth to it... makes the games feel a little more exotic than the scorelines thus far would suggest. According to some of the reports coming out of South Africa, it's quite cool when you're in the ground itself.

If anyone was wondering what note the horn is, it's a B flat. Below the middle C.

But this is all by-the-by given today's result. A great day for the underdog.

I won't be made a persona non grata for linking to a Sun ad, will I? No Liverpool supporters out there I hope...

  • Speaker: Every Four Years,

Dudes. Dudes. What about New Order's tune for the 1990 World Cup, "World In Motion"? It's magnificient because it combines house, pop, sports-rap and football chants

I do have a soft spot for World In Motion, but it may as well be this year's English anthem considering the amount of play it's getting here. The Sun have released a sweet, kinda catchy tune... with Terry Venables turning his hand to Elvis.

This thread is great stuff - nice foresight PAS. And, Mike, always happy to share a floor with a Hoops supporter.

  • Pass the crisps: UK Election watch,

Moving from Channel 4 to BBC, Sinn Fein winning the West Tyrone seat was met with a "umm... well... that's, er, good".

  • Pass the crisps: UK Election watch,

Some slightly curious happenings at my constituency in Hackney South. Was given a pass to vote 30 minutes after the 10pm closing time. Feel a little sheepish given the numbers who appear to have been turned away.

    Oh well.

If the exit polls are to be believed, it's so very depressing to see the Lib Dems lose relative ground since 2005.

  • Field Theory: The second test and the…,

I played cricket one sunny Saturday afternoon with Bob Blair's younger brother. He was nearing the end of his cricketing days, and I was meandering through mine. His reputation always preceded him, because, as was echoed around the boundary ropes of Wellington cricket grounds, 'his brother was one of the bravest, most honourable men to wear the Silver Fern'.

I thought he'd be a pushover because, hey, he's old and I'm young. He bowled me first ball and while I stubbornly walked back to the pavilion he stopped me and said: "your stance is too open. You'll find it difficult to play a right arm in-swinger with such an open stance."

    He was a nice bloke.

  • Hard News: You're all fabulous,

Thank God you just said it. I get regularly paid out for my open regard of Lily but her record is just a great piece of pop... not even a guilty pleasure.

Similarly, The Horrors' album is fantastic - probably my album of the year. Where did that come from? It's kraut / shoe gazer heaven, and I'm in love. The Stroke album... just a fucking great collection.

Single wise, Bones from A Mountain Of One is getting better with each listen. Nice!
