  • Hard News: Feminist as crazy old man,

Isn't the 'Trannies nicked my paper on the tube' a spoof piece? Or have I missed another Guardian article where she describes someone as 'it'?

Although this line from the Guardian is pretty awful regardless: 'Think about a world inhabited just by transsexuals. It would look like the set of Grease. '

  • Island Life: The Guilt of Clayton Weatherston,

But has her name actually been smeared? I mean, does anyone here actually think she's a provocative slut who deserved to be murdered?

Everyone I've talked to about this seems to have horrified by Weatherston's claims about Elliot and seen right through them.

I'm sure this is true for the vast majority of people but someone at work did come out with the old "I'm not saying she deserved it, but...." line.

Walking? Some people hadn't mastered this by high school?

I know! In hindsight this was actually one of the best options as it just involved 'walking' around in Hagley Park with your friends for a couple of hours.

At my girls' high school (circa 2002 mind) we could take these life-skill modules - they always seemed to me to be some weird sort of recipe for an ideal 'lady'. The ones I can remember were : crafts, public speaking, walking, entertaining, self-presentation (which was how to put on make-up and have good posture) and out of left field - flying.

Also, of all my friends the one who can do the most 'manly' things (diy, car stuff, fuses etc.) is a girl learnt it all at girl guides.

  • Hard News: Of Monsters and Old Boys,

I went to a private girl's school in Christchurch. I had a really positive experience with great teachers who had the time (due to well behaved kids and small classes) to nurture individual talents.

However, I would never send any kids of mine to private school (with a possible exception for major learning problems or suffering bullying at their local school). The main reason is that a significant proportion of the kid's I went to school with fulfilled every private school kid stereotype - pretty racist, class-ist, and very entitled - their parents were usually just as bad. Obviously they weren't all like that - I like to think I'm not, and the people I were friends with weren't either (mostly). I don't think that the culture of the school particularly encouraged it but being surrounded by like-minded kids at school and socially certainly amplified it.

  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

I wonder how this would apply to mail-order/from home businesses. My parents sell wine by internet/mail order and even though there is no wine on site the house has to have a liquor licence.

  • Hard News: For Young and Old ...,

I'm 22 and started reading Girlfriend and Dolly when I was about 11. They were first given to my by my mum who had bought them for research as she was a community health educator. I'd have to say that they provided my friends and I with a whole lot of really solid information about sexual health - mostly in dismissing common myths about virginity and stds.

Also, I think I've heard of the (tiny) Somalian community in Blenheim as suffering some racism. That's just small town gossip though.

  • Hard News: There's Always One,

As a frequent user of the Blenheim airport I am gutted. I like it because it is so easy laid back for someone like me who is a stressy traveller. As far as I know there isn't even a security guard there all the time.

On some of the small planes you don't have to check in any of your luggage, they just cross your name off the list and go when everyone is on.

I've even been on the plane when someone got on by mistake and we had to taxi back in and swap passengers. And you can use your cell phone on board.

Maybe I'll have to start using the Koromiko airport near Picton instead.

  • Busytown: Pavlova Paradise,

Ben, I think its more that whenever I want to write a comment on any website I feel a bit like I'm drunk at a party. I'll get excited and say what I mean but not in the way I mean to say it. Then I'll wake up the next morning and be embarrased. Then I'll have to stay at home for at least the next week and avoid certain bars...
