  • Hard News: Public Address: Technical Profile,

    Why I recommend Chrome for everyday browsing:

    Chrome is fast to load, fast to render and has a good javascript engine. Each tab runs as it's own process (meaning you don't lose all your tabs if one crashes, like with Firefox). Not that I've seen one crash actually. You can drag tabs off to become their own windows and drag them back. The magic address bar is also your search bar, which I find hard to live without after using it. It's minimalistic and clean.

    If you're especially keen you can read about their design decisions in comic form at http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/.

    I still use Firefox for dev stuff though.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Highest Mountain,…,

    Such a great result. Met a random German/Norwegian guy in a bar in Oslo and his first word to me was "Congratulations!".

  • Hard News: The Cycling Superhighway,

    the chair of Cycle Action Auckland

    I initially read that as Cycle Aviation Auckland and imagined a sky full of da Vinci style cycle-copters. But the reality is also very cool, great to see this kind of thing happening and I hope it catches on everywhere.Would be nice if every new motorway/arterial road had a separate cycleway built in from the outset.

  • Hard News: Aspie On,

    Depending on how much of a console gamer he is, he might like the XNA framework for developing windows and Xbox 360 games. It uses C# with DirectX, which is one of the nicer ways to interact with DirectX. The development environment Visual Studio Express is pretty friendly too, especially the intellisense auto completion. It's all free, with some registration required.

    I'm not especially pro microsoft, I use C++, LAMP, javascript and Java as the need arises, but if I was going to make a game tomorrow that's what I'd use. It gives you access to the same powerful guts as the big games use (3D graphics, sound, input etc using DirectX) without the fiddliness of having to do it in C++.

  • Stories: Love,

    it may not always be so; and i say
    e.e. cummings

    it may not always be so; and i say
    that if your lips, which i have loved, should touch
    another's, and your dear strong fingers clutch
    his heart, as mine in time not far away;
    if on another's face your sweet hair lay
    in such a silence as i know, or such
    great writhing words as, uttering overmuch,
    stand helplessly before the spirit at bay;

    if this should be, i say if this should be --
    you of my heart, send me a little word;
    that i may go unto him, and take his hands,
    saying, Accept all happiness from me.
    Then shall i turn my face, and hear one bird
    sing terribly afar in the lost lands.

    That sums it up for me so far...

    I do love my instruments and music and the ocean though. Went to Waikite Valley today, damn nz is beautiful.

  • Southerly: A World First of the Second Kind,

    Re comic sans - here is a handy flowchart. And tshirt. The internet has spoken!

    Although given that your use is unusually well considered and, dare I say - almost appropriate - I for one am prepared to overlook it.

  • Field Theory: How you wear it,

    An alternative/complement to Movember is the inaugural Choptober. (Disclaimer: one of my mates is the co-founder). 100% of donations go to the five NZ charities being represented and it avoid problems with moustache disliking girlfriends.

    At my work we've done movember for the last few years and choptober this year and I have to say on the style front we are looking more like victorian england than a miami vice appreciators convention like usual. Just need to source some top hats...

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

    Should driving 5 k/hr over the posted limit on a clear suburban road be against the law?

    Ever done it?

    There are plenty of laws that people decide to break all the time, yet they agree that the law should exist. Laws can have a role in changing societal opinions and goodness knows, NZ attitudes about violence towards children could do with a change.

    Good point. I should have said I support the notion that physical discipline should be a parental choice, and don't think they should be punished for it necessarily. But the line has to be drawn somewhere, and the way the law is now seems most sensible and most protective of a kids right to have a safe home.
