And this just serves to highlight how incredibly important investigative journalism still is in this country. Melanie Reid would have spent so much time and effort gaining the trust of these people. The ex-Mediaworks people, Mel Reid and Newsroom, Paula Penfold and the Stuff Circuit team are out there still doing the hard yards and the important investigative work which eventually, hopefully, holds people to account. And they do this on principle, despite the ever-diminishing rewards and budgets. There has also been amazing work done by younger journos such as Kirsty Johnston, but where is the formalised, professional support to train up other younger press people? It is so precarious for them, and they are far more likely to branded as “activists”, rather than being acknowledged as doing the important methodical work of tracing out the facts.

The darling of the neo-liberals, and free-market proselytizer, economist Milton Friedman was in favor of a UBI, only he called it a negative income-tax. I'm interpreting of course, but central thesis being government bloat ... so much time and money spent deciding who is and who is not the deserving poor.

I've loved K Road since I was school girl, who walked the entire length of it, almost everyday, of the late 1980s. It has beheld all my incarnations; westie, punk, student, mother, art-wannabe, dive-bar denizen, public-servant. I count myself to have had the greatest of luck to have lived on K Road during that golden period of time when both the Wine Cellar and Brazil were in existence. I love that the owners of Brazil were such uncompromising people they didn't on-sell the business when they shut-up shop. And I am so glad Rohan is still there, and hope he hasn't had to make too many compromises, beyond the new round signage. I'm leaving the city soon for a while, partly because I am not that thrilled with the gentrification of the rest of the city, but I'm sure K Road will be fine. I take heart from another of my fave dive bars, The Lucha Lounge. It is closing down soon unfortunately, but for a number of years it was the epitome of degentrification, a great little bar, super cheap, amazing music, hanging out on the edges of an old-monied, posh, shopping suburb. But that is what it takes, people like Rohan and Karen who see a gap, not in the marketplace, but in the community. People whose guts and hard work create community. Legends both.

Old time listener on the B here too. Can I just say that I think your contribution to politics, media and culture in this country has been a wonderful achievement Russell. It has also been a much greater and worthier contribution than that of a certain someone who had one of the first political chat shows in the country and then went on to head TVNZ news and now interminably works the pundit circuit. I speak of course of your voice clone, Bill Ralston.

As a librarian I have been quietly outraged by this situation for many years. I would like to point out that my colleagues in the tertiary library sector have been proactive in trying to set up structures that would support new paradigms in academic publishing, digital repositories and so on. Academics by in large support these...until the day they can't get access to a particular title...then they will kick up a stink. And also when it comes time to getting work published...they of course will always go for the most prestigious title. We need to come to some kind of agreement to confer prestige in other ways. There was a journal in neuroscience, where the entire editorial board and peer review panel resigned on mass and set up their own open access journal. This was probably 10 years ago though and I don't remember the title. But it should be happening more often. These costs have been spiraling out of control for years. So please quit with the library bashing...as you will see in the Penny Carnaby clip Rob posted above...we are more than aware and have been going on about it for over a decade.

I am by no means an overly PC, third-wave feminist type. And I am part of workplace where we indulge in some pretty filthy banter, which I enjoy and am fully complicit with....but that guy....was a stone cold misogynist and I am so glad he has gone.

It is a bit annoying, I enrolled a month ago and still had to cast a special vote on the day......at the polling booth in the electorate I am enrolled in...it is a very fiddly process with a complicated 2 part envelope with codes that are covered up by tape...so I am not surprised it takes so long...I think the bulk of the special votes may be people in my position rather than advance and out of electorate votes.
